{"id":489970,"date":"2026-02-19T10:57:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T10:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/489970\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T10:57:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T10:57:11","slug":"shortage-of-bone-cement-could-cause-surgery-delays-in-crushing-blow-to-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/489970\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortage of bone cement could cause surgery delays in &#8216;crushing blow&#8217; to patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">A shortage of medical cement could lead to delays in patients receiving hip and knee replacements and other pre-planned surgeries, experts have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Due to a global supply issue from the NHS\u2019s main provider of bone cement, hospitals have been ordered to ensure supplies are directed to trauma and urgent care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Campaigners said the news is a \u201ccrushing blow\u201d to patients who have been waiting for surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Bone cement is used to anchor artificial joints and fill the space between the new joint and the patient\u2019s bone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">There are several different types of medical cement that are used in operations, including orthopaedic and dental surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">It is understood the NHS has supplies for the next two weeks and officials have estimated there could be a gap of six to eight weeks\u2019 supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Heraeus Medical, the main supplier of bone cement for the NHS, reported a packaging fault affecting its bone cement products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The issue has temporarily halted production at its main site and will impact product availability for at least two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">An NHS England spokesperson said: \u201cFollowing a global supply issue, the NHS is issuing immediate guidance to hospitals to ensure trauma and urgent care can safely continue, enable the use of alternative suppliers where possible, and to support prioritisation of orthopaedic waiting lists based on patients\u2019 needs over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cAny stock already in hospitals is unaffected, and the NHS is working closely with Government and leading professional bodies to ensure safe and effective care can be provided while supply is resolved, and to reduce delays for patients requiring less urgent care as far as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Subscribe free to our <a class=\"qNUzV q7LZa\" href=\"https:\/\/itvnews.substack.com\/\" data-testid=\"fecp-link-anchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weekly newsletter<\/a> for exclusive and original coverage from ITV News. Direct to your inbox every Friday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Deborah Alsina, chief executive of Arthritis UK, said: \u201cThis is a crushing blow for those individuals who have finally made it to the front of the orthopaedic surgery queue after a long time waiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">She added: \u201cWe trust the Department of Health and Social Care will work hard to address the supply issues given the impact on those waiting in pain whose lives are left on hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Arthritis UK are offering support to anyone concerned about the impact of these delays, providing a free helpline for those waiting for surgery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Tens of thousands of patients are given hip or knee replacements in England each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Fergal Monsell, president of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), said it is working with NHS officials to \u201cidentify possible alternative supplies\u201d to reduce the impact on patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cThis is a situation that is beyond the control of trauma and orthopaedic surgeons and NHS organisations,\u201d said Mr Monsell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">BOA say they will update surgeons with developments so they can treat their patients as the situation develops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Want a quick and expert briefing on the biggest news stories?
