{"id":490211,"date":"2026-02-19T13:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/490211\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T13:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:34:08","slug":"lions-have-two-clear-internal-candidates-to-replace-rod-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/490211\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions Have Two Clear Internal Candidates To Replace Rod Wood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">After a decade of leadership, Rod Wood is stepping down as team president\/CEO of the Detroit Lions, setting the stage for one of the most important<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> front-office decisions<\/a> of the Sheila Hamp era.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">Wood will remain with the organization during a global search conducted by Russell Reynolds Associates, but the franchise\u2019s next president will play a pivotal role in sustaining Detroit\u2019s rise from NFC North cellar-dwellers to perennial playoff contender.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">While an external hire is certainly possible, two internal candidates stand out as ideal successors: Chris Spielman and Mike Disner.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Spielman, Special Assistant to the Owner and CEO<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Few individuals are more closely tied to the Lions\u2019 cultural transformation than Spielman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">A franchise legend and the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all-time leading tackler<\/a>, Spielman returned to the organization in 2021 as special assistant to Hamp and Wood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">From the outset of Hamp\u2019s tenure, there was a concerted effort to surround ownership with trusted football minds. Spielman has been pivotal to that shift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6y\">He assisted in the interview and hiring processes for general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, two moves widely credited with reshaping the trajectory of the franchise.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">Spielman\u2019s value lies in the trust he\u2019s built with Hamp. He operates at the highest level of the organization and has Hamp\u2019s ear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">Known for his bright football mind and no-nonsense leadership style, he has helped establish a culture rooted in accountability and toughness. The Lions\u2019 ascent from irrelevancy to playoff contenders coincides directly with his involvement in the front office.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">Elevating Spielman would signal continuity. It would reinforce that the Lions are doubling down on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">football-first approach<\/a> that has fueled their turnaround.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">Players and coaches already respect him, and fans view him as both credible and authentic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">The primary concern with Spielman is that he doesn\u2019t possess the business background which Wood does. Spielman\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is much more football-centric.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">It&#8217;s why the next individual I&#8217;m about to bring up is even more of the ideal candidate to succeed Wood.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Disner, Chief Operating Officer<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7m\">If Spielman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">embodies football credibility<\/a>, Disner is the epitome of an individual with executive readiness.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7p\">With two decades of experience in the NFL, including eight seasons with the Lions, Disner seems destined to be the president of an NFL franchise one day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7s\">Promoted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Operating Officer<\/a> in 2022 after serving as senior vice president of football and business administration, he already oversees the organization&#8217;s football operations and football administration, as well as spearheads the Lions&#8217; strategy and revenue teams.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7v\">Additionally, among league circles, Disner is viewed as one of the sharper cap and contract strategists in football. In fact, he has played an integral role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/lions\/onsi\/news\/should-lions-pursue-all-pro-dolphins-safety-in-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing financial flexibility<\/a> to Detroit since Holmes and Campbell took over in 2021.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7y\">He\u2019s also interviewed for other NFL front-office jobs, including for the Atlanta Falcons\u2019 team president vacancy.
