The sprinters were finally set to get another opportunity on stage 4 of the UAE Tour<\/a>, after Tuesday\u2019s time trial and Wednesday\u2019s mountain stage, but things went wrong on the run-in to the finale. A heavy crash ripped through the peloton, with Fabio Jakobsen<\/a> among those brought down. Alongside the Picnic PostNL rider, Ethan Hayter<\/a>, Robbe Ghys<\/a> and Daan Hoole<\/a> also hit the ground.<\/p>\n

The breakaway was still up the road, but as the finale approached, the pace in the peloton continued to rise. That increase in speed contributed to a mid-bunch crash, with Hayter initially appearing to be the worst affected.<\/p>\n

However, it quickly became clear that Jakobsen, Hoole and Ghys were also down. They were unable to avoid the incident and ended up sliding across the asphalt of a long, wide road cutting through the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Ghys soon received the worst news, as the Belgian rider was forced to abandon. Jakobsen, Hoole and Hayter were able to continue. Jakobsen even provided the TV cameraman with a brief update <\/a>after the crash: \u201cI rode over something and my front tyre blew. I went straight down. But I\u2019ll make it home.\u201dFootage from the scene did indeed suggest that Jakobsen\u2019s front tyre gave way, which then triggered the crash involving the Dutchman and others.
