Broncos storm to 3 tries in 5 minutes! | 01:18

Unlike last season’s prelim against Penrith, Adam Reynolds, couldn’t nail the right sideline conversion meaning the Broncos trailed by a converted try with just under three minutes left.

As it turned out, it wouldn’t matter anyway as Hull KR were able to repel the Broncos in what was a nerve-wracking final few moments.

Australian teams have been kept winless in the showcase fixture since 2020 while Hull KR are now one of the few English sides to complete a quadruple: winning the League Leaders’ Shield, Super League title, Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge.

The Broncos were dealt a huge blow early when Corey Jensen suffered a head knock inside the first 90 seconds. He didn’t return after failing his HIA, leaving Brisbane a forward short.

Hull KR would hit the scoreboard first when Tom Amone chased down a messy Tyrone May kick, with the playmaker knocking the ball on but saving it with his foot.

Hull KR get lucky with opening try | 01:01

Brisbane made some poor errors inside their own 20, gifting Hull KR handy possession which they took full advantage of, scoring the next two tries to jump out to an 18-0 lead.

The Broncos saved some face in the first half when Gehamat Shibasaki scored on the back of a skilful bit of play from winger Josiah Karapani.

Leading 18-4 at the break, the Broncos’ late first half momentum was stymied in the second half when Robins centre Oliver Gildart scored.

It was 30-4 after 57 minutes when former Cowboys outside back Peta Hiku crossed and it appeared to be game over.

However, the Broncos proved during last season’s golden run that they are the comeback kids, and it appeared as if they would live up to that reputation with the next four tries, but their efforts would be in vain as Willie Peters’ men held on for a famous win.

BRONCOS – 24
