{"id":491625,"date":"2026-02-20T04:21:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T04:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/491625\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T04:21:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T04:21:17","slug":"full-list-of-11-australian-women-with-isis-links-trying-to-leave-syria-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/491625\/","title":{"rendered":"Full list of 11 Australian women with ISIS links trying to leave Syria revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC can reveal the names of the 11 women connected to former Islamic State fighters in Syria who attempted to journey home to Australia this week<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The group of 34 Australians, including 23 children, has been living in camps in Syria since the fall of the so-called caliphate, and some of those children were actually born behind the razor wire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some of the women are believed to have accompanied their husbands to the war zone, but others came with family and married IS fighters once they arrived. Some say they got stuck in Syria by accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Many of them have previously spoken to the ABC.<\/p>\n<p>Read more from the ABC:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-16\/australian-families-with-isis-links-leave-camp-in-syria\/106351298\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106351298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left the Al-Roj camp in north-eastern Syria on Monday in the hopes of returning to Australia<\/a>, but were forced to turn back shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An official at the Al Roj camp said that when the group left, staff started dismantling their tents, and when the group unexpectedly returned, some had to bunk in together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Wednesday, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-18\/australia-issues-teo-against-isis-linked-citizen-in-syria-camp\/106360092\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106360092\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed one of the women is now the subject of a Temporary Exclusion Order (TEO)<\/a>, potentially banning her from travelling to Australia for up to two years on national security grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is not clear who the woman subject to the TEO is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the ABC can reveal the names of the 11 women who tried to leave after obtaining a handwritten list from inside the camp.<\/p>\n<p>Nesrine Zahab<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nesrine Zahab with her veil lifted\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0cb4ae78d22355905f3e2551f4c42161.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nesrine Zahab revealed her identity to Four Corners. (Four Corners)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Nesrine Zahab is now in her early 30s, but she came to Syria from Sydney in her early 20s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She has previously claimed she did not realise she was entering Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Who walks into a war zone?&#8221; she <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vSp6htBRs5w\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Four Corners in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Nesrine said she had been on a family holiday in Lebanon, when she and a female cousin snuck away to deliver aid to refugees on the Turkish side of the Syrian border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said someone then asked for her passport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That kind of freaked me out,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said she only realised she was in Syria when she saw an Islamic State (IS) flag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I found that I was in Syria. Did I have a heart attack? Of course I had a heart attack,&#8221; she told reporter Dylan Welch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Did I cry and scream and chuck a fit like a little girl? I chucked the biggest tantrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Did it work? (Four Corners)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Aminah Zahab is the mother of Muhammad Zahab and Sumaya Zahab, and the aunt of Nesrine Zahab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She would now be about 50 years old and had followed her son to Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re clueless parents. We had a lot of trust in our children, a lot of trust,&#8221; she told Four Corners in 2019 from the Al-Hol camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t know how to do much things in life. As we raised our children, and we just let the children rule our lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I feel very angry. I feel very devastated. (ABC News: Haybar Othman)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Zeinab Ahmed is the second-eldest daughter of Mohammed and Kawsar Abbas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She last spoke to the ABC from Al Roj in early 2025, as she made an impassioned plea to the Australian government to help get the group home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She feared for her safety, and the lives of her children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, she revealed that Australian officials had travelled to the camp in 2022 to meet with the women and children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health checks and DNA tests were conducted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Months later, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-29\/australian-women-and-children-return-to-sydney-from-detention\/101593252\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101593252\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four families were repatriated<\/a> to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They took the first group and we were so happy that some of us were getting out, some of our kids will be saved,&#8221; Zeinab said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once they took them in there was backlash, there was backlash from when the announcement was made and then they never came back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The process undertaken by officials in 2022 likely paved the way for travel documents to be issued for the group of women ahead of their failed attempt to leave Al Roj earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In recent days, the Australian government has repeatedly denied offering support to the group to make the journey home \u2014 with the exception of what they are legally obligated to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This would include issuing travel documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Al Roj officials have told the ABC that the group have been issued with single-entry passports.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsty Rosse-Emile<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kirsty Rosse-Emile sits in a chair wearing a head scarf during an interview in a room with a map pinned to the wall.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/85d4c3a3cdb4159cc92ef5fc9bd29132.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kirsty Rosse-Emile told the ABC in 2025 she has been detained in the Syrian desert for many years.
