(Des Woolford: user submitted)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In its submission to the committee, the industry body, Seafood Industry South Australia, said the algal bloom had been catastrophic and the &#8220;greatest ecological, economic and social challenge faced by South Australia&#8217;s seafood industry in a generation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As well as buyback implementation, licence rationalisation and resource reallocation, the industry called for investment in calamari, whiting, garfish and snapper units across Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Port Wakefield-based marine scale fisherman Bart Butson told the ABC&#8217;s Country Hour that a buyback scheme was &#8220;much needed and wanted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bart Butson speaking into a microphone at the senate inquiry public hearing. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/75b3ba29fa90d8d9d29d1369d8acdf7f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bart Butson also gave evidence to the Senate inquiry into the algal bloom in Ardrossan.\u00a0 (ABC News: Viki Ntafillis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Fishers \u2026 know how slow the recovery of the fish stock is, so they know it&#8217;s a long time before we&#8217;ll be properly commercial fishing again, so there&#8217;s still some desperation out there amongst the fishers,&#8221; Mr Butson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[A buyback scheme] would mean different things to different people \u2014 if a fisher is older, he may want to slip into retirement, but if a fisher is younger, he may want to pay off some debt and start work in a different career.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In late 2025, the South Australian opposition pledged a $21-million voluntary fisheries buyback scheme \u2014 if elected at the upcoming state election \u2014 to allow commercial fishers to leave the industry amid the harmful algal bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven said the Labor government had invested $500,000 to investigate the feasibility of a buyback scheme.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a large shed stands in front of a microphone\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/c058df1d11a09a31b70d8d90aee06c02.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">South Australian Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven. (ABC Riverland: Will Hunter)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In their statement, Ms Centofanti and Mr Cowdrey said the report had not adequately confronted the &#8220;scale of government failure&#8221;, including gaps in baseline monitoring and delays in public communication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Simms said while he endorsed all of the report&#8217;s recommendations, he had concerns that it did not contain findings that explicitly highlighted &#8220;deficiencies in the State Government&#8217;s response&#8221; given what he called a &#8220;weight of evidence&#8221; presented to the committee that it had been too slow to respond to the bloom and had significant gaps in data collection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Vanilla&#8217; recommendations<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ecologist and now candidate for the upper house in the upcoming March 21 state election, Faith Coleman, told ABC Radio yesterday that the recommendations were &#8220;all pretty vanilla&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman standing beneath a jetty.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3d3828baac6c5ebee210f00f57574c14.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Faith Coleman says the report&#8217;s recommendations were &#8220;all pretty vanilla&#8221;.
