\n\tAs new trailers and spot<\/a>s<\/a> premiere<\/a>, excitement is growing surrounding Christopher Nolan<\/a>\u2018s follow-up to his critical and box office hit \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d which won him the Academy Award for best director.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>\u201d is a classic piece of literature by Homer that is divided between 24 different books, preceded by \u201cThe Iliad.\u201d It tells the 10-year journey story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters multiple perils and discovers the death of his crewmates. Telemachus (Odysseus\u2019 son), Penelope (Odysseus\u2019 wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon and Zeus are all major characters.<\/p>\n

\n\tHistorians and scholars date \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d to sometime between 750-650 BC. The first printed Greek version became available in 1488. In the centuries since, it has remained one of the most studied, adapted and parodied stories ever with adaptations including the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1954\u2019s \u201cUlysses\u201d with Kirk Douglas and the 2000 Coen brothers comedy \u201cO Brother, Where Art Thou?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith a new adaptation on the horizon, here is everything we know so far about Nolan\u2019s take on \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tHave any photos been released from the film?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal shared the first official image from the film on X<\/a>, with the caption reading: \u201cMatt Damon is Odysseus. A film by Christopher Nolan, #TheOdysseyMovie is in theaters July 17, 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA couple of posters were then released, including one with the tagline \u201cDefy the gods.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWho are the latest additions to the cast?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAnthony Molinari (\u201cBarry\u201d) is the latest addition to the cast of Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d with recent roles in \u201cAbbott Elementary,\u201d \u201cAnimal Kingdom,\u201d \u201cThe Offer\u201d and \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once.\u201d Molinari previously worked with Nolan on 2020\u2019s \u201cTenet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTravis Scott, Elliot Page (\u201cInception\u201d), Himesh Patel (\u201cTenet\u201d), Bill Irwin (\u201cInterstellar\u201d) and Samantha Morton (\u201cMinority Report\u201d) are the latest additions to \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d cast, joining Mia Goth as Melantho, John Leguizamo as Eumeaus, Rafi Gavron and Shiloh Fernandez, among many others.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoth is known for her recent scream queen roles in \u201cMaXXXine\u201d and \u201cPearl,\u201d along with Luca Guadagnino\u2019s \u201cSuspiria,\u201d \u201cInfinity Pool\u201d and \u201cA Cure for Wellness.\u201d Leguizamo has acted for multiple decades, earning Emmy nods for \u201cWhen They See Us\u201d and \u201cWaco\u201d and also appearing in \u201cEncanto,\u201d \u201cRomeo + Juliet,\u201d \u201cJohn Wick\u201d and \u201cThe Menu.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGavron was in \u201cA Star is Born\u201d opposite Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. He got his breakout in Anthony Minghella\u2019s film \u201cBreaking and Entering\u201d alongside Jude Law and Juliette Binoche. Meanwhile, Fernandez is known for roles in \u201cEvil Dead,\u201d \u201cEuphoria\u201d and \u201cUnited States of Tara.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWho else is cast in the film and have they worked with Nolan before?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tLike the all-star cast that was assembled for \u201cOppenheimer\u201d (and resulted in a best ensemble win<\/a> at the Screen Actors Guild awards), \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is filled with major talent in Hollywood. In addition to Damon, names include Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Charlize Theron as Circe, Benny Safdie<\/a> as Agememnon and Jon Bernthal<\/a> as Menelaus. <\/p>\n

\n\tNew additions Page, Patel and Irwin have all worked with Nolan before \u2014 notably, Irwin voiced TARS the robot in \u201cInterstellar.\u201d Damon most recently appeared in \u201cOppenheimer\u201d as Lt. General Leslie Groves after his under-the-radar appearance in \u201cInterstellar.\u201d Pattinson appeared in \u201cTenet\u201d as Neil, alongside John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki. Going back a little farther, Hathaway had a supporting role as an astronaut in \u201cInterstellar\u201d and Catwoman in \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d marking just over 10 years since her last time working with Nolan.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Holland, Zendaya, Nyong\u2019o and Theron, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d marks their first time collaborating with Nolan. Holland and Zendaya, who are a real-life couple, will reunite on screen after the Marvel \u201cSpider-Man\u201d films.<\/p>\n

\t\tHas any footage from the film been revealed?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tYes, the teaser trailer was leaked<\/a> on TikTok and X amid its theatrical rollout. The 70-second preview, intended exclusively for theaters, falls in line with Nolan\u2019s dedication to the theatrical experience. The release of his seven-time Oscar winner, \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d marked the director\u2019s shift from Warner Bros. to Universal, a move motivated by Warner Bros. announcing it would release its entire 2021 theatrical slate simultaneously on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe teaser features Matt Damon\u2019s Odysseus and his son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDarkness. Zeus\u2019 laws smashed to pieces. A kingdom without a king since my master died,\u201d a voice says over footage of a violent ocean crashing against the shore. \u201cHe knew it was an unwinnable war, and then somehow\u2026somehow he won it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tHow was the film shot?\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is confirmed to be the first film to ever be entirely shot on Imax cameras<\/a>. Nolan\u2019s craft has become synonymous with Imax as \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d \u201cDunkirk,\u201d \u201cTenet\u201d and \u201cInterstellar,\u201d the latter of which was re-released to much success<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>for its 10th anniversary, were all shot with Imax cameras.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhere was the film be shot?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Variety exclusively reported<\/a>, the film was partly filmed in Sicily, which is notable for being a location for Odysseus\u2019 wanderings in the epic. Shooting there began in spring 2025 on the island of Favignana, considered the \u201cgoat island,\u201d which many believe to be the place where Homer visualized Odysseus landing with his crew. Other locations include Greece, Italy, the U.K., Iceland, Morocco, Scotland, Ireland and Hollywood soundstages, making \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d a global shoot.<\/p>\n

\t\tWho else is creatively involved?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tNolan is also writing and producing the film, reuniting with his longtime producing and life partner Emma Thomas, who won the Best Picture Oscar for \u201cOppenheimer\u201d alongside Nolan. Italy\u2019s Wildside, a Fremantle company, is servicing the Sicily portion of the filming.<\/p>\n

\t\tHow faithful will this adaptation be to \u2018The Odyssey\u2019?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt remains unclear how closely Nolan intends to follow Homer\u2019s famous story, although the social media post from Universal Pictures<\/a> teases \u201ca mythic action epic shot across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWhen is the film set to release?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is set to release worldwide on July 17, 2026 in theaters. Nolan previously released \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d \u201cDunkirk,\u201d \u201cInception\u201d and \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d in the same month.<\/p>\n

\n\tTickets for IMAX screenings only went on sale<\/a> in July 2025, a year before the film\u2019s release.
