A Melbourne start-up has entered the increasingly charged debate over freight ERP dominance, arguing that the architectural foundations of systems such as\u00a0CargoWise\u00a0are no longer fit for a volatile trade environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Argocore\u00a0this week\u00a0emerged\u00a0from stealth with\u00a0Cargonautix, an \u201cintelligence-native\u201d execution platform for freight forwarders and customs brokers. Its core claim: traditional freight ERPs were built to record transactions, not to shape outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLegacy systems were designed primarily for linear process, transaction recording and financial integrity,\u201d said CEO Jason Picknell. \u201cEmbedding predictive intelligence into tightly coupled architectures is complex. They are structurally constrained rather than incapable.\u201d<\/p>\n

In most established ERP systems, compliance checks, tariff validation. and documentation processes are triggered at defined points in a linear workflow. Risk tends to surface at rejection, delay, or arrival, when commercial options are limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMost systems surface risk when it is too late,\u201d said Mr Picknell. \u201cWe surface it while the shipment is still movable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cargonautix evaluates classification confidence, FTA eligibility, and tariff exposure continuously across the shipment lifecycle, rather than sequentially, the company claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe industry is shifting from recording what happened, to influencing what should happen next.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an era of fast-changing tariff and sanction complexity, Argocore is arguing that waiting until clearance to identify exposure is structurally flawed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whether incumbent platforms can retrofit that kind of continuous intelligence into deeply coupled ERP stacks\u00a0remains\u00a0an open question.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike many AI-led workflow tools now appearing in freight tech,\u00a0Argocore\u00a0is not positioning itself as a bolt-on analytics layer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor most operators, it is a replacement rather than a permanent add-on,\u201d said\u00a0Mr\u00a0Picknell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Migration can be phased through APIs, but the long-term model is\u00a0full\u00a0execution within a unified architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That puts Cargonautix in direct competition with CargoWise, Magaya, Descartes, and other established providers at a time when forwarders are already scrutinising platform dependency following recent pricing debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Switching ERP remains one of the most disruptive moves a forwarder can make, affecting finance, compliance, customer portals, and operational processes. Incumbents retain powerful advantages in scale, global customs connectivity, and embedded accounting capability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the tone of the conversation is\u00a0starting to\u00a0shift.\u00a0Where once the industry asked which ERP to\u00a0standardise\u00a0on, some are now asking whether the underlying model\u00a0is fundamentally limiting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Argocore\u00a0is careful to draw boundaries around its AI claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTariff logic, duty calculations, FTA validation, and regulatory schema enforcement are rules-based. They must be deterministic and auditable. Law is rules.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

AI is applied to classification confidence scoring, anomaly detection, document extraction, and tradelane risk scoring, it said, but not to replace regulatory accountability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAI supports decision-making within compliance guardrails; it does not replace accountability.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The platform integrates directly with Australian Border Force and quarantine authorities, and is entering user acceptance testing ahead of commercial launch next month. International expansion is expected to begin in Asia-Pacific markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Data sovereignty is also a key plank of its positioning, it added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomer operational data belongs to the customer. We do not\u00a0monetise\u00a0or pool shipment-level data,\u201d explained\u00a0Mr\u00a0Picknell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Argocore\u00a0is not alone in sensing opportunity.\u00a0Established alternative providers say inbound enquiries from forwarders exploring options have increased.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Newage, which has operated in freight software for more than 15 years and claims strong positions in the UAE and India, reports \u201ca surge of interest from forwarders who want a robust, proven platform\u201d, rather than early-stage experimentation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Taken together, AI-native entrants and\u00a0established\u00a0second-tier vendors are testing whether freight\u2019s dominant ERP model is more vulnerable than it appears.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For now, CargoWise and other incumbents remain deeply embedded across global forwarding operations. But if volatility continues to shift commercial risk upstream before goods even move, systems designed primarily to record transactions may find themselves under increasing pressure to evolve.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAutomation improves efficiency,\u201d said\u00a0Mr\u00a0Picknell. \u201cCollapsing linear structure changes outcomes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
