{"id":493875,"date":"2026-02-21T04:17:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T04:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/493875\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T04:17:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T04:17:11","slug":"how-a-window-opened-for-is-linked-australians-to-leave-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/493875\/","title":{"rendered":"How a window opened for IS-linked Australians to leave Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For years, Al-Hawl and Al-Roj have been two big problems, with no easy solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The detention camps in north-eastern Syria collectively housed more than 70,000 people at their peak in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They included the wives and children of Islamic State group fighters, who were captured or killed when US-backed Kurdish forces helped defeat the terrorist group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After holding a large swathe of autonomous territory that included both camps, Kurdish-led forces are now reluctantly handing over control to Syrian government forces following their successful military offensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Syria seized the Al-Hawl camp in January, prompting many detainees to flee as the Kurds retreated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rows of blue and white tents along a dirt path, with no people in sight.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/dec32d7d4f68b59a3f8bf5c8b8357e45.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Al-Roj camp in Syria has held thousands of people, including dozens of Australians. (ABC News: Heidi Pett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For now, Al-Roj is still controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and its future is uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But after repeatedly asking foreign countries to repatriate their citizens, officials in Al-Roj have been letting detainees with travel documents leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s an opportunity a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/australian-women-who-lived-under-islamic-state-come-home-syria\/104953800\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104953800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">group of 34 Australian women and children<\/a> weren&#8217;t about to pass up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But their journey to Australia hit a roadblock, when Syrian authorities wouldn&#8217;t let the group leave the Kurdish-held zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They appear to be caught in the middle of a power struggle that dates back many years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A tent in the rubble with a child in a red shirt \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/425529291065041a5aecec9a811e5dfe.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are approximately 2,000 women and children living in Al-Roj. (ABC News:\u00a0Baderkhan\u00a0Ahmad)<\/p>\n<p>Kurds help defeat Islamic State group<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After controlling large parts of northern Syria and neighbouring Iraq, the Islamic State group was defeated in 2019, thanks to the joint efforts of Kurdish forces and a US-led coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Kurds went on to control nearly a third of Syria&#8217;s territory, much of it rich in resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But in late 2024, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-08\/a-year-since-liberation-syrians-cautiously-celebrate-scrape-by\/106112708\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106112708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian president Bashar al-Assad&#8217;s regime was toppled<\/a> by Islamist rebels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The new president, former fighter Ahmed al-Sharaa, vowed to unify the country, which had been gripped by more than a decade of civil war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That included taking back territory held by the Kurdish-led SDF.<\/p>\n<p>Read more from the ABC:Syrian government launches lightning offensive<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In January, Syrian government forces launched a major military offensive against the SDF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Following days of violent clashes and significant territorial losses, the SDF agreed to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Under the terms of the deal, Kurdish military and civil structures would be gradually absorbed into the central Syrian government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Government forces would also be deployed to major Kurdish cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The US, which had long supported the SDF, had since established friendly terms with the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa, the rebel leader who has been ruling Syria since ousting Bashar al-Assad in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">President Donald Trump even hosted al-Sharaa at the White House, in what was the first-ever visit for a Syrian leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Trump also rolled back sanctions and welcomed Syria into an anti-Islamic State coalition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-11\/trump-meets-syrian-president-al-sharaa-in-washington\/105995466\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump hosts landmark meeting with Syrian leader<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">US President Donald Trump hosts the Syrian leader for a landmark White House meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In January, as Syrian government forces consolidated power over Kurdish-held territory, the US suggested the SDF had passed its use-by date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The original purpose of the SDF as the primary anti-ISIS force on the ground has largely expired,&#8221; US special envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Damascus is now both willing and positioned to take over security responsibilities, including control of Daesh detention facilities and camps,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Syria signalled it planned to close both Al-Hawl and Al-Roj camps.<\/p>\n<p>Syrian forces take over Al-Hawl<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Syrian government forces took control of the larger camp, Al-Hawl, after the SDF rapidly withdrew in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">During the chaos, many of the foreign IS-linked families reportedly escaped, and aid agencies had to pull back due to security fears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-17\/who-are-isis-linked-australian-families-in-syria-al-roj-camp\/106352074\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What we know about the Australian families still stuck in Syria<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia has made limited progress in clearing a passage for the Australian women and their children, citing safety issues in and around the camps, and security concerns back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Before the SDF withdrew, more than 12,000 families lived in Al-Hawl and roughly half were foreigners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are now reportedly fewer than 1,000 families living there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Syrian government has transferred some families from Al-Hawl to a new camp near Aleppo, in the country&#8217;s north-west, but many former detainees remain unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Before the ceasefire, SDF forces also withdrew from a prison housing IS militants, after coming under fire from Syrian government forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The SDF claimed at least 1,500 detainees escaped, but the Syrian government said only 120 broke free, and that most were recaptured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Against that backdrop, this week the US said it had transferred 5,700 Islamic State prisoners to Iraq, saying it would prevent a resurgence of Islamic State in Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the SDF still controls Al-Roj \u2014 which is home to the Australian cohort \u2014 the camp&#8217;s days could be numbered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Its administrators are now trying to send home as many foreign detainees as possible, while it still has control.<\/p>\n<p>A reluctance to repatriate<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are approximately 2,000 women and children living in Al-Roj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Aid agencies have warned conditions in the camp are growing increasingly dangerous, with inadequate access to food, clean water and medical care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Australian officials have previously visited the Australians in Syria, the federal government is only offering limited assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Temporary travel documents have been issued, allowing the 11 women and 23 children to leave Al-Roj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But as they discovered on Monday, that&#8217;s only half the battle.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One of the women is now subject to a temporary exclusion order (TEO), which could bar her from entering Australia for up to two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Thursday, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-17\/anthony-albanese-on-isis-families-trying-to-leave-syria\/106352492\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106352492\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said<\/a> he had &#8220;nothing but contempt&#8221; for the women who had travelled to Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After leaving the camp and heading for Damascus, Syrian forces instructed the convoy to turn around, saying their journey from the Kurdish-held region had not been properly coordinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A source with high-level knowledge of Australia&#8217;s national security protocols told the ABC it was possible Australia asked Syrian authorities to delay their passage while it scrambled to impose a Temporary Exclusion Order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They said the prime minister&#8217;s condemnation of the women was a distraction from the obligations Australia had to its citizens, however politically unpalatable they may be.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For years, Al-Hawl and Al-Roj have been two big problems, with no easy solutions.
