Ericka Huggins scored 12 points and had six rebounds and two steals to lead the Hornets. Anise Geiger came off the bench to score eight points and Jermesha Frierson pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. The Hornets committed 30 turnovers, which Norfolk State turned into 38 points.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMorgan State (4-22, 3-7 MEAC) is coming off a 73-47 thumping on the road at South Carolina State. The Lady Bears had defeated South Carolina State 14 consecutive times until last month&#8217;s 62-59 loss in the first meeting this season in Baltimore (1\/10).<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nJAMES SCORES CAREER HIGH 23: <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/tiyanna-james\/10803\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10803\" target=\"_blank\">Tiyanna James<\/a> scored a career-high 23 points in the loss at North Carolina Central (2\/12). A native of Virginia Beach, Va., James shot 7-of-14 from the floor and connected on four three-pointers, while shooting 83% (5-of-6) from the free throw line. She also had one assist, a rebound and two steals. Her 23 points surpassed her previous season high of 17 points scored in the MEAC opener at Maryland Eastern Shore (1\/3).<\/p>\n<p>THE RIVALRY CONTINUES:\u00a0Rivals Morgan State and Coppin State will meet for the 95th time in Round 1 of the annual &#8216;East vs. West&#8217; season series on Saturday, Jan. 31 at PEC Arena. Morgan State would win last season&#8217;s finale, 59-54 to split the season series. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series, 48-46. Morgan State has won 14 of the last 18 regular season contests over the Eagles. Also known as the &#8216;Battle of Baltimore&#8217; or simply &#8216;Coppin-Morgan&#8217;, this season will mark the sixth consecutive season that Morgan State and Coppin State will close out the regular season playing against each other in the season finale (March 5, 2026) at Hill Field House.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nTHE STREAK IS OVER: The Morgan State women&#8217;s basketball team put an end to its season-long 14-game losing streak with its 64-63 victory over North Carolina Central (1\/8). It was the program&#8217;s third longest losing streak on the Division I level. The Lady Bears, who trailed 29-22 at halftime and 34-24 early in the third quarter, used a 20-0 run to gain momentum and take a 44-34 advantage with 2:56 left in the third. Morgan State would then have to stage off a comeback by Eagles.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nIT WON&#8217;T BE US: Despite its 91-33 loss to fifth-ranked LSU (12\/16), Morgan State joined iconic women&#8217;s basketball programs Duke and Louisiana Tech. While all three were dealt a loss to LSU, they are also the only three programs thus far this season to hold the high-powered LSU Tigers under 100 points. LSU, which improved to 12-0 in the win over Morgan, began the season eclipsing the 100-point mark in its first eight games and has reached 100 points in nine of its 12 contests.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nBANNERMAN SETS CAREER-HIGH IN SCORING: Senior guard <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/ja-la-bannerman\/10611\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10611\" target=\"_blank\">Ja&#8217;la Bannerman<\/a> scored a game- and career-high 32 points at UCF (12\/14). A native of Baltimore, Bannerman shot 10-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from three-point range and connected on all six of her free throw attempts. Bannerman, who was held to two points in the first half, scored 11 points in the third quarter and then exploded to score all 19 of Morgan&#8217;s fourth quarter points. Her 32-point outing surpassed her previous career high of 25 points she scored earlier this season against Washington Adventist (11\/12).<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nCHARM CITY HOOPS CLASSIC:\u00a0Morgan State will begin the 2025 Charm City Hoops Classic hosting UMBC on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Bears will conclude the event with a trip to Towson, Md. to face the Tigers on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m. Last year the Lady Bears finished 1-1 last year for the second consecutive season in the Charm City Hoops Classic. The Lady Bears defeated Towson, 64-63 at home (11\/14), before falling on the road to UMBC, 81-72 (11\/17). In 2023, local foes Morgan State, Towson and UMBC agreed to play each other every year in both men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s basketball in what is being billed as the Charm City Hoops Classic. Last season the Lady Bears also split their contests in the inaugural classic, falling on the road to Towson (80-69), before defeating UMBC (65-42) at home. The three schools previously participated in the Battle of Baltimore series for six seasons from the 1997-98 season through the 2002-03 campaign.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMORGAN STATE IN PUERTO RICO: Morgan State concluded its eighth time participating in a Puerto Rico sponsored event and the program&#8217;s seventh trip to Puerto Rico and first time competing in the Puerto Rico Shootout (Nov. 26-28). Morgan State appeared seven times in the Puerto Rico Clasico event beginning with the 2016-17 season. The 2017 tournament was moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. due to the damage of Hurricane Maria. Morgan State did not attend during the 2020-21 campaign due to an abbreviated schedule because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Lady Bears finished this season dropping all three games in San Juan and fell to 2-14 all-time in Puerto Rico, following a 101-39 loss to 16th-ranked Kentucky in the finale (11\/28).<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMAKE IT A DOUBLE: <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/maya-woodson\/10624\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10624\" target=\"_blank\">Maya Woodson<\/a> recorded her first double-double at Morgan State in the contest against Johns Hopkins (11\/18). The two teams met during last season&#8217;s Education Day, which Morgan State won 85-45.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nDOMOND NAMED NINTH HEAD COACH AT MORGAN STATE: Morgan State University announced the hiring of <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/coaches\/nadine-domond\/2717\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"2717\" target=\"_blank\">Nadine Domond<\/a> on April 9, 2025, as the ninth head coach in the women&#8217;s basketball program&#8217;s history. An accomplished collegiate coach and former WNBA player, Domond comes to Baltimore from Virginia State University, where she led the Lady Trojans to back-to-back 20-win seasons and historic success, including their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMORGAN PICKED FIFTH IN MEAC:\u00a0The Morgan State Lady Bears were picked to finish fifth in the 2025-26 MEAC Preseason poll. The Lady Bears, who finished sixth a season ago, received 62 points. Howard was picked to claim the title with 10 first-place votes and 118 points. Defending MEAC regular season and tournament champion Norfolk State was picked to finish third with four first-place votes and 107 points.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nBANNERMAN NAMED TO MEAC PRESEASON FIRST TEAM:\u00a0Senior guard <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/ja-la-bannerman\/10611\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10611\" target=\"_blank\">Ja&#8217;la Bannerman<\/a> was named to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team. Bannerman started 16 of 24 games a year ago, averaging 8.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. The Baltimore native tallied 204 points, 31 rebounds, 25 steals, 24 assists and three blocks. She ranked 14th in the MEAC in 3-pt FG (.298), 18th in 3-pt FGs per game (1.0) and 20th in scoring. Bannerman led the team in 3-pointers made (25) and reached double figures in scoring 10 times, including a season-high 21 points in a win against Shepherd.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nBUTLER, JOHNSON NAMED TO MEAC PRESEASON THIRD TEAM: Senior forward <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/jael-butler\/10613\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10613\" target=\"_blank\">Jael Butler<\/a> and senior guard <a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/gabrielle-johnson\/10632\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10632\" target=\"_blank\">Gabrielle Johnson<\/a> were named to the Preseason All-MEAC Third Team. A native of Gilroy, Calif., Butler averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season. She started 18 of 27 games played and finished third on the team in blocks with 20. Butler finished with 211 points, 118 rebounds, 14 steals and six assists. She ranked fifth in the MEAC in FG% (.439), eighth in blocked shots, 14th in rebounding and 22nd in scoring. Johnson ranked 12th in the MEAC in assists (2.1) and 21st in scoring (8.0) last season as a junior. A native of Baltimore, Johnson averaged 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She started in 13 of 25 games and finished with 201 points, 57 rebounds, 53 assists, 15 steals, and six blocks.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nWELCOME TO THE CAVE:\u00a0Morgan State welcomes the addition of seven newcomers to the 2025-26 program this season. The annual MEAC Basketball Tournament moved to Norfolk in 2013 after spending the previous four years in Winston-Salem, N.C. from 2009 through 2012.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nONE LAST ROAR:\u00a0The 2025 MEAC Tournament was the last for Morgan State head coach\u00a0Ed Davis, Jr.\u00a0on the sideline for the Lady Bears. Davis, who took over the helm of the women&#8217;s program prior to the 2016-17 season, ranks third on the Morgan State career coaching charts with 120 victories. Davis was named the 2019-20 MEAC Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Bears to a 12-4 MEAC mark. During the 2021-22 season, Davis guided the Lady Bears to a share of the MEAC regular season crown, the program&#8217;s first and lone regular season title. A year later, the Lady Bears reached postseason play for just the second time on the Division I level, when they advanced to the WNIT. Last season, Davis had three players (<a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/naya-ojukwu\/9920\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"9920\" target=\"_blank\">Naya Ojukwu<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/michaela-bogans\/10627\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10627\" target=\"_blank\">Michaela Bogans<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/nia-green\/9913\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"9913\" target=\"_blank\">Nia Green<\/a>) earn All-MEAC honors, marking the ninth consecutive season in his nine years at Morgan State that Davis had an All-MEAC selection. A four-time Hall of Famer, one as a player at West Virginia State (2008) and three as a coach at Bowie State (2014) and twice at Delaware State (2017 and 2024), Davis is proud of the impact that he&#8217;s had on kids at the three schools he&#8217;s coached at (Bowie State, Delaware State and Morgan State). &#8220;I&#8217;ve coached 600 girls and 550 got their degrees. The championships are nice, but those are the things that mean a lot to me,&#8221; said Davis.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nOJUKWU NAMED MEAC NEWCOMER:\u00a0Redshirt freshman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morganstatebears.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/naya-ojukwu\/9920\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"9920\" target=\"_blank\">Naya Ojukwu<\/a>\u00a0was named 2024-25 MEAC Newcomer of the Year and earned All-MEAC Second Team honors. Ojukwu marks the ninth consecutive season the Lady Bears have had an all-conference selection in Coach\u00a0Ed Davis, Jr.&#8217;s nine seasons at Morgan State. A native of Meridian, Idaho, Ojukwu helped the Lady Bears to a tie for fifth place in the MEAC regular season standings. She averaged a team-leading 16.5 points and a team-best 9.1 rebounds per game, while recording 18 blocks, 17 steals and eight assists to go with 231 points and 127 rebounds. Ojukwu finished the regular season ranked 2nd in MEAC games in scoring, 4th in rebounding, 5th in FG%, 5th in blocks, 8th in FT% and 23rd in steals. She reached double figures in scoring in 13 of the 14 games she played and had seven double-doubles. Ojukwu closed out the regular season recording a career-high five blocks, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the win at rival Coppin State (3\/6).
