{"id":495728,"date":"2026-02-22T00:50:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T00:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/495728\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T00:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T00:50:12","slug":"geoscience-australia-explores-storing-hydrogen-gas-in-adavale-basin-salt-caverns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/495728\/","title":{"rendered":"Geoscience Australia explores storing hydrogen gas in Adavale Basin salt caverns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An ancient rock formation that is older than the dinosaurs is being explored as a solution to one of Australia&#8217;s biggest green energy problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Geoscience Australia has identified a thick salt deposit in outback Queensland&#8217;s Adavale Basin as a potential underground hydrogen battery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With the potential to power millions of homes across eastern Australia, the project could help address the looming <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2023-04-06\/concentrated-solar-power-technology-comeback-electricity-mirrors\/102184372\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102184372\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renewable energy storage gap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Adavale Basin sits below the towns of Quilpie, Blackall and Charleville, and the largest underground freshwater reservoir in the world \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2024-04-04\/glencore-wastewater-great-artesian-basin-carbon-capture\/103564954\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103564954\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Great Artesian Basin<\/a> (GAB).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As Geoscience Australia&#8217;s $31 million drilling project wrapped up, the question residents wanted answered was whether their only reliable water source would be at risk.<\/p>\n<p>An &#8216;on-demand&#8217; underground battery<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">First discovered in 1958, geologists consider the Adavale Basin to be &#8220;under-explored&#8221; and notoriously difficult to study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A 3D model shows the Adavale Basin sits deep within the earth's crust, below the Great Artesian Basin and the Galilee Basin.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/66a1360b77fcc5a2793b17c7325e9370.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Adavale Basin is difficult to access, located underneath the Great Artesian Basin and Galilee Basin in Queensland. (Supplied: Geoscience Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Buried underneath the Eromanga and Galilee Basins \u2014 two other large rock formations that are part of the broader GAB \u2014 there is no evidence of the Adavale Basin on the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It also contains the only layer of rock salt discovered anywhere in eastern Australia that is potentially thick enough to store hydrogen energy deep in the Earth&#8217;s crust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Known as the Boree Salt deposit, Geoscience Australia head of advice, investment, attraction and analysis Mitchell Bouma said it could be used to create artificial battery-like containers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can dissolve that rock salt out and you can store things within that dissolved cavern, like hydrogen gas or compressed air,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You can produce these things [hydrogen gas] out there, pump them into the cavern, and it&#8217;s basically this on-demand battery that&#8217;s under the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Storing hydrogen gas in underground salt caverns has been used overseas for decades, with the first site at Teesside in the UK in operation since 1971.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A plastic tub of cylindrical rock samples taken from deep in the earth's crust.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/94c309c4e71a69a224d7e8a18e75fac4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Geoscience Australia has gathered rock core samples from the Adavale Basin. (Supplied: Geoscience Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Independent energy geoscientist Mark Bunch from the University of Adelaide said this kind of storage had &#8220;enormous potential&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You go underground because of the scale,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We can store all kinds of industrial gases and other chemical products at the surface in huge tanks, but you can do it at a much vaster scale [hundreds of cubic kilometres] if you go underground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the United States, the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/aces-delta.com\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub <\/a>being developed in Delta, Utah will use two salt caverns to store 5,500 metric tonnes of working capacity each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A joint venture between oil giant Chevron and Mitsubishi Power, the company estimated it would take more than 40,000 shipping containerss worth of lithium-ion batteries to produce the equivalent megawatt-hours of one cavern.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Windmill at sunrise in paddock.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/d4ccbad576a9b295c27ef2f9be3f2f07.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An outback site near Blackall is being touted for its potential to store hydrogen energy underground. (Supplied: Geoscience Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Dr Bunch said pumping hydrogen gas into underground salt caverns was unlikely to damage the basin, because of how salt and gas interact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The key to safe gas storage is maintaining the correct pressure; in tanks, too little pressure can create a dangerous vacuum, while too much pressure can lead to explosions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But underground, Dr Bunch said even in a &#8220;worst-case scenario&#8221; of a fault in the rock caused by the wrong pressure, the salt would become a &#8220;toothpaste-like substance&#8221; that naturally adjusts to pressure changes and prevents rock moving.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This shouldn&#8217;t ever be much of an issue because salt is free to move,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In the scenario [of a fault], the salt would move to fill the space, shrink and be pulled in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Bunch said that movement would spread the effect and prevent further damage to other rocks, and noted this would be happening about 2km below the groundwater used for drinking water and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A cattle drover rides a horse through bushland.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/008ce588291a864b5234f5c55a729156.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Agriculture is one of the industries that relies on the Great Artesian Basin as its primary water source.
