They want to see their old pub come back to what it was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why would you make it one of the typically new, modern hotels? We&#8217;ve got that everywhere. In Braidwood, he said, the future was old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everything we do will be created in its old image,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s 160 years old. It&#8217;s magic \u2014 look at it. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You have all of rural Australia combined in one town,&#8221; Mr Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I first came to Braidwood, I was in awe. My imagination would run wild.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Smith grew up hearing tales of bushrangers, heists and shoot-outs. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The infamous Clarke Gang carried out about 70 robberies in the Braidwood area during the 1860s gold rush, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-01-09\/worst-mass-murder-of-police-in-australian-history-remembered\/8169914\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/8169914\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shooting four policemen and leading to the first Royal Commission in NSW<\/a> \u2014 held in Braidwood in 1867.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But then the gold dried up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From 1900, Braidwood went to sleep,&#8221;  Mr Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The railway promised in the 80s and 90s never reached the expectantly-named Station Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And because the town went into hibernation, the architecture survived.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Braidwood streetscape\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/5ea7dffdc7685e563a8db78a5825823f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Braidwood&#8217;s architecture has survived more than 100 years. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The streetscape of Braidwood is amazing. (Supplied: Braidwood Museum)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Smith said having dual authorities delayed the building process and made everything more expensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The problem is, every time there&#8217;s a development in Braidwood, there&#8217;s an extra process to go through,&#8221; Mr Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s delayed for three or four months, or longer. And everything becomes more expensive to build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all very good that heritage is being preserved, but it comes at a price, and the price is borne by the local people. It&#8217;s not borne by the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s worth preserving, but it needs funding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The review said Braidwood was &#8220;at a turning point&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A story to tell<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Smith thinks the key to Braidwood&#8217;s future is heritage tourism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some 1.5 million cars pass through the town annually \u2014 it&#8217;s the main thoroughfare for Canberrans heading to the NSW south coast and popular for &#8220;a pie and a piss,&#8221; locals say.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Braidwood main street\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/c2d922cc49ef0a562e89edc2ff0d2ae3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In 2013, Transport for NSW estimated 1.5 million cars passed through Braidwood annually.\u00a0 (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The future of Braidwood is to get these people to stop,&#8221; Mr Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Braidwood is perfectly set up to be a hub for heritage tourism. We need to capitalise on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Braidwood has a terrific story to tell. We need to tell the story, and it would also create great value for NSW.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Building a plan for the future<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 2024 review suggested incentives for owners of heritage items, helping them maintain their assets, and the creation of a heritage interpretation plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With a grant from the state and local governments, a team are working to create that strategic plan, to better share Braidwood&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The review found the sense of disappointment that Braidwood was heritage-listed and so few people recognised it or were aware of it,&#8221;  heritage archaeologist and Braidwood local Kirsty Altenburg  said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A lot of the people who were very keen on the listing and supported it were starting to get pretty disappointed with some of the decisions being made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A lady standing on the main street.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/161f5b469682de40fcd32a9f79bf883e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Braidwood local Kirsty Altenburg said since the listing in 2006, nothing had been done to preserve the heritage of Braidwood. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the new strategic plan would &#8220;tell the stories of Braidwood&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Heritage is not about stopping development; it&#8217;s very much about managing development in a way that can be well maintained and provide opportunities,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She hoped the plan would create a pathway forward for Braidwood to remain a beautiful relic of old Australia into the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The town is still here, and the town is still thriving. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That was very uniquely Braidwood,&#8221; Mr Pharaoh laughed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In the [heritage] listing, they focus on the building \u2014 the architecture \u2014 but what they&#8217;re not capturing is the scope of Braidwood as a living town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Braidwood is raw. It&#8217;s a living heritage town \u2014 not this Disneyland version of a heritage town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everything else is cookie-cutter.
