{"id":498151,"date":"2026-02-23T04:46:30","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/498151\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T04:46:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:46:30","slug":"nurses-strike-at-adelaides-lyell-mcewin-hospital-cancelled-after-pay-increase-ahead-of-state-election-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/498151\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurses&#8217; strike at Adelaide&#8217;s Lyell McEwin Hospital cancelled after pay increase ahead of state election start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The nurses&#8217; union has cancelled a strike at one of Adelaide&#8217;s largest public hospitals after securing a 2 per cent pay rise on top of a 4 per cent immediate increase in wages announced earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The cancellation of the strike at the Lyell McEwin Hospital comes just a day ahead of writs being issued to mark the official start of the South Australian state election period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The state government announced on Tuesday that the 4 per cent pay rise would be backdated to January 1 and, on Friday, Industrial Relations Minister Kyam Maher said the extra 2 per cent would start on October 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) members at the northern suburbs hospital <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-18\/nurses-strike-rescheduled-at-lyell-mcewin-hospital\/106357820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106357820\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had planned to strike for 24 hours from 7am on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The union had previously said it wanted a 21 per cent pay rise over three years, starting with 7 per cent this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ANMF South Australian chief executive Elizabeth Dabars said the 6 per cent pay increase came about because nurses and midwives &#8220;stood together and were prepared to act&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Elizabeth Dabars stands outside a hospital in Adelaide\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/b16b9c2a690209fe418405644de9b18f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Elizabeth Dabars says the campaign for higher wages will continue.
