NSW<\/a> drivers who keep a clean record for a year could see a demerit point wiped from their licence, as the state government moves to make its safe driving reward permanent.<\/p>\n

The Demerit Point Reward Program, introduced as a trial in 2023, has been deemed \u201csuccessful\u201d, prompting the government to introduce legislation to make it a permanent feature of the state\u2019s road rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone says good times don\u2019t last, they\u2019re wrong\u2026\u201d Premier Chris Minns said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoon, our demerit reward program will be permanent \u2014 rewarding safe drivers across NSW, forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

If passed, the $2.8 billion reform will allow eligible unrestricted licence holders to have one demerit point removed after remaining offence-free for a continuous 12-month period.<\/p>\n

Learner and provisional drivers will remain excluded under the Graduated Licensing Scheme.<\/p>\n

Drivers must also hold a valid licence and remain free of relevant offences throughout the entire 12-month period to qualify.<\/p>\n

Since the trial began, more than two million demerit points have been removed from NSW drivers\u2019 records.<\/p>\n

The scheme was originally due to run from January 17, 2023, to January 16, 2024, but was extended until January 31 this year following strong uptake.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistory has shown that enforcement and penalties alone, aren\u2019t enough to keep our roads safe,\u201d Minns said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the demerit reward program, we\u2019re taking a new approach \u2014 giving NSW motorists a clear \u2018carrot and stick\u2019 incentive to get their license and driving record back on track.<\/p>\n
