Andrew’s arrest will ‘go down in the history books’<\/a><\/p>\n Like so many of the elite caught in Epstein’s web, Andrew believed he would escape scrutiny for his behaviour. But it is precisely because of his name and his position that his alleged wrongdoing has now delivered him into the hands of the law.<\/p>\n The complex legal framework around the line of succession means any changes require all countries where King Charles is head of state \u2014 including Australia and Canada \u2014 to pass new laws.<\/p>\n “In light of recent events concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, I am writing to confirm that my Government would agree to any proposal to remove him from the line of royal succession,” Mr Albanese wrote.<\/p>\n “I agree with His Majesty that the law must now take its full course and there must be a full, fair and proper investigation.<\/p>\n “These are grave allegations and Australians take them seriously.”<\/p>\n At least nine police forces in the United Kingdom are reviewing or have launched investigations into accusations made against Mr Mountbatten-Windsor.<\/p>\n The royal’s arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office came amid allegations he shared sensitive government information with Epstein during his time as trade envoy.<\/p>\n Mr Albanese is the first leader of a Commonwealth country to confirm support for legislation to strip Mr Mountbatten-Windsor of his succession rights.<\/p>\n Anthony Albanese’s letter is addressed to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. (Supplied)<\/p>\n Calls for Andrew’s removal<\/p>\n Last year some Australian MPs called<\/a> for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to be removed from the line of succession after the release of Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s memoir.<\/p>\n Ms Roberts Giuffre, who died by suicide in Western Australia, was instrumental in bringing global attention to the former prince’s association with Epstein after alleging she was trafficked to the royal when she was 17 years old and sexually assaulted<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mr Mountbatten-Windsor reached an out-of-court settlement with Roberts Giuffre in 2022 for an undisclosed sum that legal experts estimated could be as high as $US10 million ($14 million).<\/p>\n Virginia Giuffre’s memoir released<\/a><\/p>\n The late Virginia Giuffre’s memoir details how she became involved in the shadowy world of notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which led to her abuse at the hands of some of the world’s “wealthiest and most powerful” people.<\/p>\n “Given Virginia Giuffre’s personal connections to Australia, Anthony Albanese should be encouraging his mate Keir Starmer to start the natural next step \u2014 removing Andrew from the line of succession,” West Australian teal MP Kate Chaney told the Sydney Morning Herald in November.<\/p>\n “No Australian wants any possibility of Andrew being our head of state.”<\/p>\n King Charles III is the sovereign of 15 Commonwealth realms, including Australia.<\/p>\n ‘I don’t think anyone’s going to say no’<\/p>\n Despite Mr Albanese’s backing it is unclear whether the UK will move forward with plans to remove Mr Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession.<\/p>\n Andrew was stripped of his title of prince by his brother but remains in the line of succession. (Reuters: Toby Melville)<\/p>\n Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond told Radio National Breakfast<\/a> that “it’s not that difficult” to do.<\/p>\n “It would need the acquiescence of the other 14 realms, obviously \u2026 but I don’t think anyone’s going to say no,” she said.<\/p>\n “I mean, quite frankly, if he’s not viewed [as] fit to be prince, who’s going to say he’s fit to be king?<\/p>\n “However remote that possibility is \u2014 and clearly being eighth in line is very remote indeed.
