{"id":500862,"date":"2026-02-24T11:26:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T11:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/500862\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T11:26:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T11:26:14","slug":"thousands-without-power-as-intense-storms-sweep-across-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/500862\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands without power as intense storms sweep across Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dangerous storms are continuing to move across Victoria after dumping heavy rain across large parts of Melbourne today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An emergency warning was briefly issued just after 7:30pm for people in areas north-west of Melbourne to immediately take shelter, including Seymour, Castlemaine, Kyneton and Kilmore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">State Duty Officer Shane McBride has told <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/live\/melbourne\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Radio Melbourne<\/a> heavy rain was still expected but the risk of flash flooding and large hail had reduced by 8:30pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They are fast moving so widespread rainfall expected of between 30 and 60 millimetres going through on those cells,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It followed an emergency warning being issued at 2pm for severe thunderstorms affecting a large area stretching from Sunbury, north-west of Melbourne, through St Albans to Coburg, Preston and down to Melbourne&#8217;s CBD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A second separate emergency warning was issued for an area from Healesville to Yarra Junction and out past Warburton, east of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large pool of water outside the North Melbourne police station.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fd6c6046ff3df34572fd07a8c86c8af3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Water pools outside the North Melbourne police station. (Supplied: Renae Stoneham)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">About 9,000 properties were without power at 7pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Citipower and Powerco spokesperson Emma Tyner said 890 customers lost power in the Sunshine North area in Melbourne&#8217;s west after lightning hit a pole, while in the northern suburbs, 765 customers in Northcote and more than 1,000 in Thornbury had been disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Tyner said crews were working as quickly as possible to restore power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We certainly ramped up resources leading up to today.
