(ABC News: Berge Breiland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Other Bradman milestones have lately been on the minds of some of the sport&#8217;s keenest observers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the quarter century was not a figure that mattered much to Bradman, who was in the business of tons, 25 years have now passed since his death in February 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As it turned out, Australia was about to start what became an epic Test series on Indian soil, and that was day one,&#8221; cricket commentator Bharat Sundaresan, who grew up in Mumbai, recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I remember reading in the paper that morning that Don Bradman had died. (Bryan Charlton\/SACA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While a Bradman legend has flourished in Australia, it has been followed by attempts at reappraisal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As a national symbol, Bradman has been unifying \u2014 but as a man, he remains divisive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He wasn&#8217;t particularly fond of members of the fourth estate,&#8221; said Mike Coward, who was a young reporter on an Adelaide newspaper when he first got to know the master batsman.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young Don Bradman dressed in a suit and hat, sitting in a car. He always fought against it, he always felt his space was being invaded. Because of his eminence, people wanted a bit of him right up until the end,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I never held him in any awe. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Across the country, Bradman monuments, museums and memorabilia \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-27\/bradman-baggy-green-fetches-record-price-at-auction\/106272464\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106272464\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including the baggy green cap that recently fetched $460,000 at auction<\/a> \u2014 all ensure his ongoing renown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;One thing we know about sport is that nostalgia never dies, nostalgia always sells, and nothing says nostalgia quite like Bradman,&#8221; Sundaresan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t see the story of Bradman or the history of Bradman ever not being told and re-told in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The imperfection of glory<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Test averages are matters of mere arithmetic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bradman was dismissed 70 times in Test matches, and scored not 7,000 runs but 6,996. (Supplied: State Library of South Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The elusive four runs that constitute the deficit instantly entered sporting folklore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve often thought if I&#8217;d have known he wanted four and I&#8217;d have been bowling, I&#8217;d have given him a full toss,&#8221; English bowler Sir Alec Bedser said, 50 years after that Test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think it would have been great to average 100. We&#8217;d lost anyhow, we were outplayed. So what would be wrong to give him four?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s how I look at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The sentiment is a noble one and was admirably expressed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-04-22\/sir-don-donald-bradman-missing-four-runs-average\/100078546\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bradman&#8217;s missing four runs<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">When a researcher spotted something odd about the scoring for the 1928-29 test at the MCG, he knew it had the potential to change history books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it nevertheless obscures the fact that, at the time when he actually walked out to the wicket, Bradman was already averaging just over 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was Hollies&#8217;s googly that put the dent in Bradman&#8217;s stats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Maybe there is an alternative universe where Eric Hollies doesn&#8217;t get him out,&#8221; Sundaresan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But maybe because he finished with that average \u2014 which wasn&#8217;t three figures, but was two figures dot two decimal points \u2014 that just adds to the legacy that he&#8217;s always had.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;ll always be 99.94 not out.
