I couldn&#8217;t believe this instrument would form such a strong bond with me,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Farrands, appointed principal viola of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2020, was entering the next phase of her musical journey when she made the discovery in New York.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An up-close shot of the viola.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/9124da770d4025428bff217fb4af7060.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The viola has a &#8220;mysterious and dark&#8221; sound, Ms Farrands says. (ABC News: Abubakr Sajid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The instrument is believed to be one of the finest tenor violas in existence and the only surviving example of its kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was made in 1610 by the famed Italian luthier Giovanni Paolo Maggini, and his work is highly sought after for its exceptional quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know what I was missing before it reached my hands \u2026 and this to me felt like I was holding hands with something incredibly special,&#8221; Ms Farrands said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sound is mysterious and dark, these instruments are much like humans in terms of complexity, how it looks is almost how it sounds \u2014 I would say dark chocolate, caramel, red wine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The viola was acquired under the Australian Chamber Orchestra&#8217;s unique instrument fund.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stefanie Farrands in a green dress playing her viola.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fbc4f370253bc6abbd7c6a86e4c59d07.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The viola was made in 1610 by a famed Italian luthier.\u00a0 (ABC News: Abubakr Sajid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The fund \u2014 in its 15th year \u2014 invests in rare, historic musical instruments from the &#8216;Golden Age&#8217;, crafted between the 16th and 18th centuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The orchestra owns some of the instruments, others are loaned by philanthropists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is the first viola to be purchased by the instrument fund at a cost of over $3 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We actually sold another instrument to be able to buy this instrument,&#8221; Fiona McLeod, the Australian Chamber Orchestra&#8217;s chief financial officer, said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fiona McLeod in a black and grey top, glasses, smiling.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/32fd17d188f12da183a311d0ce7d9727.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fiona McLeod says a lot of work went into verifying the instrument.\u00a0 (ABC News: Abubakr Sajid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Once purchased, the instrument underwent an extensive due diligence process \u2014 including a CT scan \u2014 to confirm its authenticity, and to ensure it was ready to play on stage with the orchestra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Not only do the orchestra test it, and blind test it, in so many circumstances and fall in love,&#8221; Ms McLeod said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We also do a lot of work behind the scenes to test the history, to verify the age of the instrument because it&#8217;s gone through many owners in its 400 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It boasts an intriguing provenance starting with distinguished British violinist and composer Henry Holmes before being sold by British firm W.E Hill &amp; Sons to an amateur musician.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stefanie Farrands in a green dress playing her viola.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fb9033e33113f624d957a95f7f542215.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The viola is the first to be purchased by the orchestra&#8217;s instrument fund. (ABC News: Abubakr Sajid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It resurfaced in the late 1920s through the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, finally resting with a US collector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The viola joins a collection of other Golden Age instruments at the Australian Chamber Orchestra, including two Stradivarius violins, a 450-year-old double bass and Richard Tognetti&#8217;s 1744 Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu violin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-15\/musicians-playing-period-instruments-from-history\/105522808\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The musicians playing instruments from history<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Period musicians are recreating history for modern audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms McLeod said the instrument gave the orchestra &#8220;an exquisite, unique sound,&#8221; while allowing audiences to experience it as a living work of art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They actually add value and longevity to the instrument by using it, unlike a piece of artwork which you put up in a gallery and people can look at,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For Ms Farrands, it has been &#8220;the greatest privilege of her life&#8221; to be able to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It pushes me to my limits, and it tests me every time I walk on stage,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a transcendent experience to be able to play this instrument; it&#8217;s truly changed my life, and I can&#8217;t explain how much I can express myself with such an array of colours and sounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I would describe it as if I were an artist and I had a palette of colours, I&#8217;ve been given access to 100 greens, and 100 blues, and 100 oranges \u2014 and with that I can weave any phrase or song.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It took five years for Stefanie Farrands to find exactly what she had been looking for.
