\u201cWe\u2019ve never been able to figure out what\u2019s going on with me and basically from lighter and lighter hits I\u2019m getting concussion symptoms,\u201d Rousey told Jim Rome<\/a> (via MMA Fighting<\/a>). \u201cI lose big chunks of my vision, my depth perception and ability to think clearly. Dr. [Charles] Bernick at the Cleveland Clinic said, \u2018I\u2019ve listened to all of your symptoms, I\u2019ve looked at all of your scans, your brain looks great.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was telling him about my history and as a kid I would get migraines all the time and epilepsy runs in my family,\u201d Rousey explained. \u201cEvery generation of my family, someone\u2019s had epilepsy and there\u2019s some sort of link between epilepsy and migraines. He was saying that people that get migraines are more susceptible to getting concussions, and the more concussions I get, the easier it is to get a migraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat he thinks is happening is that I\u2019m not actually getting a concussion every single time that this is happening,\u201d Rousey added. \u201cHe thinks it\u2019s setting off what\u2019s called migraine aura where you just lose big chunks of your vision and it\u2019s called cortical spreading depression. Where I guess your neurons get overly excited and depolarize and shut down in a wave and that\u2019s why I lose chunks of my vision when I\u2019m getting hit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not dying! CTE isn\u2019t coming to get me!\u2018 There\u2019s actually stuff we can do about it,\u201d Rousey said. \u201cAt first we couldn\u2019t find any preventative migraine medication, it\u2019s usually stuff to be used after the fact. Just recently we\u2019ve been able to find something that I can take that\u2019s preventative that will hopefully be able to resolve this issue for me. It\u2019s life changing.\u201d<\/p>\n
