Adelaide young gun Jake Soligo has undergone a minor operation to correct an irregular heartbeat.

The 23-year-old is set to return to training next week as he bids to take the field in the Crows’ AFL season opener on March 14.

The club escalated Soligo’s treatment on Thursday after already managing his training loads in recent weeks.

Adelaide medical staff and external specialists both weighed in before the decision was made to send him in for the operation.

“Anything to do with your heart’s very serious, mate,” veteran teammate Taylor Walker said on Thursday.

“Obviously he’s had some irregular beats and it’s been a bit stop-start for him the last little period.

“We’ll certainly wrap our arms around the little fella and hoping he’ll be alright for Round 1.”

Adelaide will complete their pre-season against Fremantle in Mandurah on Saturday, 13 days before their home-and-away opener against Collingwood at the MCG.

Walker, 35, declined to sit out the Dockers clash.

“I don’t know how many games I’ve got left so being able to hit the road and have a kick is something I still enjoy,” he said.

“I look forward to going to Perth.”

A sore Sam Berry has been managed, opening the door for untried onballer Charlie Edwards.

Sid Draper will only play in a SANFL trial on his way back from a groin problem.

James Peatling could be in doubt for Round 1 with a low-grade hamstring strain.

Over at Alberton, Port Adelaide have also been dealt a blow ahead of their own pre-season trip to WA to face West Coast on Sunday.

Miles Bergman has been ruled out with a foot issue while Jack Lukosius is in serious doubt.

Lukosius, who played just seven games last year in his first season since a move from Gold Coast, limped out of training on Thursday with a groin complaint.

Jason Horne-Francis (foot) got through the session and is expected to play managed minutes.

Despite the setbacks assistant coach Hamish Hartlett said the Power will treat the game as a full dress rehearsal for Round 1.

“A few things we need to sort out over the next few hours after the main training session,” he said.

“But we’ve got a reasonable understanding on how things are going to shape up.

“Obviously we had a couple of guys missing last week after the state game so it’ll be nice to have Mitch Georgiades and Zak Butters back in the mix.”

Hartlett said the AFL’s controversial new ruck rules had played a part in Dante Visentini seemingly overtaking Jordon Sweet.

“I think Dante from an athletic perspective, in terms of vertical leap, has probably got a slight advantage in that area,” he said.

“But Sweety’s just a big man who’s more than capable of jumping himself.

“Clearly the more athletic ruckmen are going to be advantaged by that rule.”
