Thousands of NSW households, including age pensioners<\/a> and families, could be eligible for a new washing machine for a fraction of the price under a fresh cost-of-living initiative<\/a> backed by the state government. The offer is first-come, first-served, so front loaders could be snapped up in days.<\/p>\n

The NSW government has opened a new round of its Washing Machine Exchange Program<\/a> and has 6,500 machines available. It follows the success of the first round in July last year, which saw overwhelming demand.<\/p>\n

For $250, eligible Centrelink and Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs cardholders can trade in their old top-loader for a brand new, energy-efficient 8-kilogram front loader. Along with the upfront savings<\/a>, households can expect to save on water, energy and detergent costs with the upgrade.<\/p>\n

Water Minister Rose Jackson said the program was about delivering real, practical cost-of-living relief<\/a> for those who needed it most.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy replacing old top loaders with modern, efficient machines, we\u2019re cutting water and power bills by up to $300 a year, while making everyday essentials more affordable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

“Last time we sold out of washing machines in next to no time, which was a huge win but left some people disappointed to have missed out.<\/p>\n

“Now we\u2019re back with more washers to take our water savings to the next level and hopefully reach people who weren\u2019t able to get one last time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program has been done in partnership with The Good Guys Commercial, with the new machines usually retailing for between $700 to $800.<\/p>\n

Last year, the $11 million program saw more than 5,000 machines snapped up within days.<\/p>\n

Seniors Minister Jodie Harrison said hundreds of seniors had benefited from the scheme.<\/p>\n

“With the current cost-of-living pressures that our seniors are facing, this program gives them a new washing machine at a discounted price, and potential savings on their bills with a more efficient, new one,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Seniors should get in quick and register, as the last program sold out within days.”<\/p>\n

Residents eligible for the scheme include those with a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Low Income Card from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs.<\/p>\n
