The Royal Australian Mint has released a new limited edition $1 coin to mark the 60th anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency.

The new coin has been changed subtly, with a sixth kangaroo added to the original design of five.

Titled Mob of Kangaroos, the illustration began circulating in 1984 and was created by designer Stuart Devlin.

But the traditional design with a mob of five kangaroos will be put on hold this year, while the new coins with a sixth kangaroo are minted.

‘A piece of our shared history’

The Mint said the new coin celebrated the anniversary of decimal currency beginning in 1966, but also the “enduring strength” of Devlin’s design.

“Most people might not notice the change straight away, and that’s part of the fun,” the Mint’s chief executive Emily Martin said.

“When you find one, you’ll know you’re holding a piece of our shared history.

“This is the first time since the $1 coin’s introduction in 1984 that we’ve made a change to its iconic design.

“It’s a moment that connects past and present — celebrating not just our coins, but the creativity and craftsmanship behind them.”

There are already more than 8 million of the new coins in circulation.

“In the lead up to today, some people in the community have found a different $1 coin in their change,” Ms Martin said.

“Some have wondered if it’s a mistake. Some have wondered what the story behind it is. It’s exciting to tell everyone it’s a part of our celebration.

“It’s six kangaroos for 60 years.”

Assistant Minister for Treasury Andrew Leigh said kangaroos were “woven into everyday life”.

“My regular run usually takes me past at least half a dozen,” he said.

“It’s fitting that an animal so familiar in our landscape remains at the centre of one of our most recognisable coins.

“I thank the skilled team at the Royal Australian Mint for the care and expertise behind this anniversary release, and I encourage Australians to keep an eye on their change for this distinctive new dollar.”

In April last year the Mint released a commemorative coin linked to the Centenary of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals, which contained a hidden message in code.

The Royal Australian Mint has released a new limited edition $1 coin to mark the 60th anniversary of…

[5
2666,64,63,99,2667,88155,5304,254385,2003,8837,5701,2668,203521,13883,74473,206462,88931,13998
post-506633","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-act","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-business","tag-canberra","tag-coin","tag-currency","tag-decimal","tag-dollar","tag-icon","tag-kangaroo","tag-local-stories","tag-mint","tag-one","tag-roos","tag-royal-australian-mint","tag-six","tag-treasury
["GET
