The last time <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/search-for-rare-aussie-creature-with-over-14000-years-of-history-065053186.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:pookila;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pookila<\/a> were documented in Cranbourne, in the city\u2019s southeast, was 1976, but now they&#8217;re flourishing again behind a predator-proof fence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That year, Malcolm Fraser was prime minister, Rocky was playing at the cinemas, and ABBA\u2019s Fernando was topping the charts. Fifty years on, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/inside-zoos-radical-plan-to-recover-seven-of-australias-rarest-creatures-023032550.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Zoos Victoria;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zoos Victoria<\/a> has confirmed pookila are once again breeding at the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/locals-forced-to-protect-homes-as-invasive-pest-reaches-plague-proportions-in-aussie-suburbs-081420384.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne<\/a>, thanks to a program it initiated in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They&#8217;re kept safe at a secure facility, away from the structured gardens that most visitors bring their families to experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It&#8217;s important they&#8217;re kept safe from predators, because there are <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/researchers-stunned-trail-cameras-capture-093000589.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:few remaining in the wild;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">few remaining in the wild<\/a>. You can watch a video of some of the pookila pups below.<\/p>\n<p>Why most Aussies will never see a pookila<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Phoebe Burns, a native rodent biologist at the zoo, has been working with \u201cpooks\u201d for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She said it&#8217;s rare to come across &#8220;pooks&#8221; in the wild because they live in complex underground burrow systems, are nocturnal, don\u2019t have an odour like feral mice, and they make little noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey very rarely make sounds. Source: Zoos Victoria<\/p>\n<p>How many of these tiny creatures are left?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cPooks\u201d are listed as endangered, and Melbourne Zoo and Moonlit Sanctuary have been breeding them to try to prevent their extinction in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although they were once widespread in Victoria\u2019s coastal heathland, from Loch Sport in East Gippsland to Anglesea in the west, numbers have plummeted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s thought that a total of just 3,000 remain at its five known strongholds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Since 2024, a total of 76 pookila have been released at the Cranbourne site and around 30 pups have been born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Burns explained the original colony was created using individuals from multiple sites to improve their genetics and form an \u201cinsurance population\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe other populations left in Victoria are geographically close to each other, so there are effectively only two areas where the five wild populations are found,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBecause they\u2019re close together, they\u2019re susceptible to the same threats, but the Cranbourne population is further away, so it spreads the geographic risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Dr Phoebe Burns at the zoo, explaining the program to save pookila.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1dfa8ae0-137b-11f1-bfdf-ad1524c49da0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dr Phoebe Burns (pictured) has been working withe pookila for over a decade. Source: Zoos Victoria<\/p>\n<p>Why pookila from other states can&#8217;t join the breeding program<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Smaller-sized colonies of \u201cpooks\u201d are found in NSW, and there are larger individuals in Tasmania. The size difference is likely due to Bergmann\u2019s Rule, which states that warm-blooded animals grow larger closer to the North and South Poles so they retain heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Because they\u2019re considered to be distinct, the Victorian, NSW and Tasmanian populations can\u2019t be interbred.<\/p>\n<p>Hope growing pookila can be saved<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No matter where they live, \u201cpooks\u201d are particularly impacted by drought, which is becoming a greater threat due to<a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.yahoo.com\/issues\/climate\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJ61EOZv_JRTUInuL3rsekDmUJVdyP6vt7IiV2HDJEjaXx5A0OEA-hwJfQ7nGmLVZCXviwOBPh9TPdg8ZBZRC5A4_zU5k_s7kBOOAGdNDR40IhfCXpSLwswPjhEtDRYm5UOLTbZRmKIrCZe8mArESOEJYWfwyvHq7MZU5BqdhTq_\" data-ylk=\"slk:climate change;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Victoria, they range from 18 to 25 grams and don\u2019t have enough body mass to conserve water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen the environment is really dry, numbers crash,\u201d Dr Burns said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They are also particularly susceptible to habitat destruction along their coastal range,<a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/300-tests-spark-call-for-ban-of-controversial-product-sold-at-bunnings-coles-woolworths-and-mitre-10-005718139.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:household rodenticides;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> household rodenticides<\/a>, and bushfires. In 2023, a bushfire wiped out 60 per cent of their habitat at Loch Sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Because of the perils they face, the success achieved by the Zoos Victoria conservation breeding program has given its staff hope the species will not be lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe can see conservation working and its recovery is properly underway,\u201d Dr Burns said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very exciting species to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Do you have a story tip?
