(Supplied: Hema Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The team enters detailed information about the track condition, hazards, camping facilities and points of interest that will be fed into Hema&#8217;s online products and detailed guidebooks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Brett Madsen, a geospatial engineer by trade, said there was no substitute for actually driving a road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re sometimes asked why we don&#8217;t just use aero photography and satellite imagery to make the maps,&#8221; Brett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But you really need to get out there and get your car dirty and see it for yourself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re just lucky we have a way more luxurious journey than the early surveyors \u2014 they were phenomenal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A long history of mapping<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal people used songs, story and rock art to record the best and safest routes across the continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Then, in the 19th century, teams of surveyors set out with horses, lugging the theodolites, chains and inkwells needed to record the first rough roads carved out for transportation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black and white photo of men standing in the bush with hats and equipment.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/6a288e6705e90d92b9153ee8fb241454.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A surveying team photographed in the Darwin area in 1869. (Supplied: Hema Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Large swathes of the interior have barely a line, the landscape too hot and dry for all but the hardiest Indigenous communities and four-wheel drivers to traverse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And it&#8217;s these remote areas that pose the greatest risk to inexperienced travellers who hit the road without a proper map.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In recent years, numerous intrepid travellers have got into strife after following the path set by generic navigation apps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Common sense not common&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s a growing issue among inexperienced travellers, according to Paul Warner from the organisation Four Wheel Drive Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are many reports of people blindly following where the voice tells them, because they presume it&#8217;s going to tell them a viable route, and that&#8217;s not always the case, especially outside of the city,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A white ute bogged on the side of a road.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/76566612696ccb476098a72cdc0c444a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The couple became bogged after trying to reverse course on a bush track they had been advised to follow by Google Maps.
