The Australian Greens have described attacks on the Iranian regime as \u201cdisgraceful\u201d and \u201cillegal\u201d after Labor and the Coalition backed US\u2013Israeli strikes.<\/p>\n
Greens leader Larissa Waters said the military action and the subsequent toppling of Iran\u2019s clerical leadership had \u201cunleashed chaos across the Middle East\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Waters also accused the Albanese government of violating international law by expressing support for President Trump\u2019s Operation Epic Fury.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrump and Netanyahu\u2019s illegal attacks last night have unleashed chaos across the Middle East,\u201d Senator Waters said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Greens condemn these illegal, abhorrent and unilateral attacks. Australians do not want to be dragged into another US-Israeli war.<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralia\u2019s support of Trump and Netanyahu\u2019s illegal attack last night was disgraceful\u2026 We cannot bomb our way to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greens foreign affairs spokesman David Shoebridge said the strikes on the Iranian regime did not justify what he described as an unlawful attack.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one seriously believes that Donald Trump cares about the rights or lives of people in Iran,\u201d Senator Shoebridge said.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust like other US wars that Australia has supported in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, the talk is about freedom and democracy but the reality is killing and destruction.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith barely a moment\u2019s pause the Albanese government has backed Trump and another US-led war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis proves without a shadow of a doubt that Labor has outsourced Australian foreign policy to Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Greens have also demanded the government rule out any involvement of joint US-Australian facilities, including Pine Gap and North West Cape, in supporting the strikes.<\/p>\n
Their condemnation came after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated Australia\u2019s support for action aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe support the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent Iran continuing to threaten international peace,\u201d Mr Albanese said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA regime that relies on the repression and murder of its own people to retain power is without legitimacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
It comes after the Albanese expelled the Iranian ambassador following revelations Iran had helped orchestrate terror attacks in Australia.<\/p>\n
Mr Albanese said Iran had been \u201ca destabilising force\u201d through its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.<\/p>\n
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also backed the strikes and sharply criticised the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe theocratic Iranian regime is authoritarian, antisemitic and abhorrent,\u201d Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wants nuclear weapons, seeks the destruction of Israel, has encouraged terrorism through its proxies \u2026 and has supplied weapons to Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSince 1979, the revolutionary Islamic government in Tehran has oppressed, imprisoned and murdered Iranians. We pray for the Iranian people at this time.
