A monsoon is expected to bring wetter conditions across North Queensland this week, but there is still great uncertainty about the movement of two developing tropical lows.<\/p>\n

Senior meteorologist Harry Clark said rain would shift north from the Whitsundays and Mackay region up the coast toward Townsville on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Isolated falls of between 50 and 100 millimetres are possible in some areas.<\/p>\n

“We often see with these sorts of systems the rainfall peak in the overnight hours,” Mr Clark said.<\/p>\n

“For the most part, the more widespread totals should be much less than that, more like 10 to 40mm.”<\/p>\n

A tropical low pressure system, expected to form in the Coral Sea by Tuesday, is rated a moderate chance of developing into a cyclone on Thursday or Friday.<\/p>\n

There is also potential for a separate low to form in the Gulf of Carpentaria.<\/p>\n

“Uncertainty is very high as to where those lows go beyond that,” Mr Clark said.<\/p>\n

“There are some indications the Coral Sea low will try and drift toward the Queensland coast, particularly the North Queensland coast, later in the week [on] Thursday or Friday.”<\/p>\n

A weak trough across Cape York Peninsula is expected to develop into a monsoon trough from today, bringing persistent showers and thunderstorms.<\/p>\n

On the waters, there are warnings for strong winds on the Mackay and Capricornia coasts.<\/p>\n

Reprieve for western Queensland<\/p>\n

Those living along sodden catchments across western Queensland are forecast to get some relief from rain, although flood warnings remain in place.<\/p>\n

A low pressure system that has brought widespread heavy rain and flooding<\/a> in recent days has moved south.<\/p>\n

Six people at an outback station in the Northern Territory near the Queensland border were rescued by the LifeFlight helicopter on Friday night.<\/p>\n

The Mount Isa-based crew winched six people to safety after their property was surrounded by floodwaters.<\/p>\n

The residents raised the alarm when they noticed rising waters were about to breach the levee surrounding their homestead.<\/p>\n

The rescue chopper landed near the homestead and relocated four men, two women and two dogs to another homestead 24 kilometres away.<\/p>\n

Nobody required medical treatment.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, four planes of essential stock landed in Bedourie in south-west Queensland, resupplying residents who remain cut off.<\/p>\n

Mr Clark said while the risk of widespread heavy rain had eased over far western Queensland, isolated areas could continue to receive heavy falls over coming days, particularly during afternoons and evenings.<\/p>\n

“It’s really a corridor that runs along the Northern Territory border, all the way from the Mount Isa area down to Birdsville,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said major flood warnings remained in place for several catchments in western Queensland, including the Georgina River and Eyre Creek.<\/p>\n

Major flooding is no longer expected at Glengyle this weekend due to the easing of rain but river levels are due to rise in coming weeks as water moves downstream.<\/p>\n

“There is a lot of water still in the upper catchment of the Georgina River and Northern Territory,” Mr Clark said.<\/p>\n

“That’s all going to flow into Queensland and eventually down through past Bedourie and on its way to Lake Eyre.<\/p>\n

“It is a very slow flood so expect those flood warnings to continue for some time.”<\/p>\n
