<\/p>\nInverness Club will host a fifth U.S. Open, the USGA announced on Saturday, with the club slated to host the 2045 U.S. Open\u201466 years after its last national championship. It will be 52 years since Inverness\u2019 last major championship, the 1993 PGA Championship won by Paul Azinger.<\/p>\n

The historic Ohio club has a long tournament history, having hosted the 1979, 1957, 1930 and 1921 U.S. Opens, the 1993 and 1986 PGA Championships, the 2021 Solheim Cup, the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1973 U.S. Amateur, the 2003 and 2011 U.S. Senior Open and the 2009 and 1944 NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n
Inverness Club will look much different than the last men\u2019s major it hosted\u2014as Andrew Green performed a complete restoration of the course in 2018, returning the course to its Donald Ross roots. The work followed changes to the course before the 1979 U.S. Open made by George and Tom Fazio that eliminated four original Ross holes from the layout in an attempt to make the course play more difficult.<\/p>\n
The club remains one of just 21 courses in the U.S. to have been ranked on every edition of Golf Digest\u2019s list of America\u2019s 100 Greatest Courses. It\u2019s currently 62nd on our list.<\/p>\n

Inverness is considered a classic Donald Ross design. In truth, it\u2019s one of his best remodeling jobs. Some Ross fans were outraged when the course was radically altered by George and Tom Fazio in preparation for the 1979 U.S. Open. The uncle-nephew duo eliminated four holes (including the famous dogleg par-4 seventh), combined two holes to make the par-5 eighth and created three modern holes on newly acquired land. In 2018, golf architect Andrew Green replaced the Fazio holes with new ones more in the Ross style, relocated greens on two other holes and added new back tees everywhere. View Course <\/p>\n
The club was also awarded the 2033 U.S. Girls\u2019 Junior and the 2036 U.S. Women\u2019s Amateur. Inverness had already been named host of the 2027 U.S. Women\u2019s Open and the 2029 U.S. Amateur.<\/p>\n

\u201cInverness charms you at the first tee with the blended fairway, practice putting green with the tee boxes, and the memorials to past golf legends.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were some excellent holes, including the 12th \u2014 the only par 3 remaining that was designed by Ross; the 10th, a shortish par 4 with an outstanding green setting, the 7th, a difficult bunkerless hole, and the 18th a devilish, short par 4.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe short par-4 18th hole was a great example of how bunker placement can challenge players off the tee box. One of the toughest courses in the country to get home.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA great test of golf. Use of elevation to run out fairways makes club selection very important. Very much a shot-maker\u2019s course, but extremely playable and fair.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAside from the slight variations in trap locations and pin placements design variety (and memorability) lacks. Every hole started to feel the same, with a drive to the end of a plateau, followed by a drop in elevation to the creek that is crossed on nearly every hole and rise back up to the green.\u201d<\/p>\n
