Jim Carrey has prompted scores of social media users to don their tinfoil hats after debuting what many believe is an unrecognisable look at a recent red carpet appearance.\n<\/p>\n

Carrey, who has largely stepped away from public life in recent years, made a rare appearance late last week at the 51st Cesar Awards in Paris, where he was awarded the ceremony\u2019s lifetime achievement Cesar d\u2019honneur.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While on the red carpet, Carrey answered media questions politely and straightforwardly, but it was his noticeably different appearance in some fans\u2019 minds that caused a stir online.<\/p>\n

In red carpet clips that have gone gangbusters on TikTok, Carrey is seen in a black tux with shoulder-length hair and bright blue eyes. In other words, enough distinguishing new features to convince fans that something was afoot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not Jim Carrey,\u201d one fan wrote, while others insisted that \u201cJim Carrey is gone\u201d and that the clips are \u201cnot how he looks, talks or moves\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the more rational end of the reactions, some suggested Carrey\u2019s years away from the spotlight meant we\u2019d forgotten what he looked like, or claimed that he\u2019d simply undergone some form of plastic surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMust have had a lot of work done to his face,\u201d one TikToker wrote. \u201cLooks very different.\u201d There is no evidence Carrey has undergone any procedure, and the absence of an explanation as to his supposedly new look spawned more conspiratorial-minded reactions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWow he\u2019s cloned,\u201d one fan theorised, with another suggesting it was an \u201cimpersonator\u201d or \u201cbody double\u201d who appeared on the red carpet in Carrey\u2019s place. \u201cI\u2019m not into conspiracy theories but this is unsettling,\u201d a third user wrote, while another simply declared \u201cIdk who that guy in the video is\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got him,\u201d another commenter wrote, rather ominously. Who \u201cthey\u201d is remains to be seen, but some corners of the internet attributed it to everything from the elusive Hollywood elite, to the Illuminati, to the celebrity cloning conspiracy that has dogged the likes of Eminem and Avril Lavigne in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Add in the fact that Carrey said he was \u201cwearing a funny face\u201d in the red carpet clip and his reputation for \u201cexposing\u201d Hollywood<\/a> in various interviews, and you\u2019ve got a powder keg rife with conspiratorial subterfuge. It\u2019s like catnip for ConspiracyTok. <\/p>\n

Much of the reaction boils down to Carrey\u2019s eye colour \u2014 with many users confused by his outing because he\u2019s \u201calways had brown eyes\u201d \u2014 but the conspiracy was loud enough to reach the desk of popular drag queen and makeup artist Alexis Stone.<\/p>\n

After scores of users suggested Stone \u2014 who is known for impersonating figures like Miranda Priestly via prosthetics \u2014 was cosplaying as Carrey on the red carpet, to the point where Stone went right ahead and took credit for the actor\u2019s new look on social media this morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAlexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,\u201d the drag queen wrote alongside an image of a Carrey-looking face mask, teeth, and shoulder-length wig.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fans quickly pointed out that Stone\u2019s image looked suspiciously AI-generated (with Stone \u2018liking\u2019 comments that said as much), adding yet more intrigue to a story already riddled with ambiguity and confusion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While it might be fun to briefly entertain such theories, the much more simple answer is that Carrey simply looks different after years away from public life, and that his resurfacing wound up within the darker corners algorithm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Or perhaps we should listen to the wise words of one commenter who suggested we all go out and touch grass. \u201cPeople need to get a grip. This is Jim Carrey just being normal and not trying to crack jokes. He\u2019s being polite,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n
