Dining at Whaleback Golf Course is on course for improvement, with a contractor picked to revamp its food and beverage building and alfresco area.<\/p>\n

The Kilmore Group was unanimously backed by the City of Canning council at its July 29 meeting to upgrade the 40-year-old building as part of plans to make the Parkwood course a key attraction.<\/p>\n

Its bid for the work was less than what the city had budgeted for.<\/p>\n

The upgrade is expected to give the building a 35 to 45-year lifespan.<\/p>\n

The city took over running the course about 18 months ago.<\/p>\n

In May the council approved spending $8 million on upgrading the food and beverage facilities and driving range at Whaleback Golf Course.<\/p>\n

This includes the addition of entertainment bays at the driving range and an expansion of the Whaleback Cafe. All of the upgrades will be self-funded through the operations of the golfing facility.<\/p>\n

Work on the upgrades is expected to run until December.<\/p>\n

The driving range will remain open during the construction periods, with some expected restrictions on the times of use, while a temporary food and beverage facility will be installed.<\/p>\n

Last month a $2.5m driving range netting project was completed, with nets as high as 36 metres.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new netting has drastically improved golfer safety on the adjacent holes and, with fewer balls escaping the range, we are able to operate the facility more efficiently,\u201d city mayor Patrick Hall said.<\/p>\n

He said the larger, modern alfresco area would meet the expected increase in users.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new facilities are going to be very impressive,\u201d Mr Hall said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entertainment bays will be state-of-the-art, and the range will have improved hitting bays with the latest ball tracking technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see Whaleback as much more than just a golf course. This significant investment will not only upgrade the facility for golfers, it will realise our vision of Whaleback being a vibrant a community destination where golf is played.<\/p>\n
