{"id":515227,"date":"2026-03-03T04:23:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T04:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/515227\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T04:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T04:23:09","slug":"will-buxton-reveals-story-of-lovely-guy-max-verstappen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/515227\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Buxton reveals story of &#8216;lovely guy&#8217; Max Verstappen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IndyCar commentator and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/series\/single-seater\/formula-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Formula 1 <\/a>pundit Will Buxton has revealed a gesture by Max Verstappen that left him teary-eyed.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his straight-talking attitude, Verstappen continues to be a divisive figure in the paddock, but stories emerge of a different side to the Dutchman. <\/p>\n<p>Buxton has recalled an encounter with the four-time world champion back in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results\/2015\/races\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a>, when Verstappen had begun to make waves in F1. <\/p>\n<p>Buxton joined Verstappen in driving in the Florida Winter Series the previous year, sharing the track as the two men\u2019s careers darted in very different directions.<\/p>\n<p>The Briton, now the voice of IndyCar on Fox, spoke of the revere surrounding Verstappen, highlighting the \u201clovely guy\u201d the Dutchman is away from the circuit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven his rivals have to take their hat off and say on his day, we just can\u2019t do what Max does,\u201d Buxton said on the Up To Speed podcast. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was talked about from the youngest of ages. It almost seemed that he was always going to make it to Formula 1. He was always going to be a World Champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the guy that you meet, the guy that you get to know away from the guy on track, is just a lovely guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Max-Verstappen-1024x576.webp.webp\" alt=\"Max Verstappen caused intrigue when he first arrived in F1\" class=\"wp-image-239102\"  \/>Max Verstappen caused intrigue when he first arrived in F1<\/p>\n<p>A special memory of Max Verstappen for Will Buxton<\/p>\n<p>Buxton then recalled a memory of Max Verstappen involving his late father, who sadly passed away six months after the encounter.<\/p>\n<p>Verstappen\u2019s gesture to his father stayed with Buxton, who recalled the story with fondness. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favourite memories of him, and I met him for the first time back in 2014 when he was just stepping out of karts into single seaters, when he made his debut in F1, my parents came to the Belgian Grand Prix that year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad was quite ill and left us about six months afterwards. But Max wasn\u2019t to know that at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was raining, and so we ran into the Red Bull motorhome to get out of the rain, and Max was there, and he said, \u2018Oh, are these your parents.\u2019 I said, \u2018Yeah, this my mum, my dad.\u2019 And Max introduced himself, and he turned to my dad and he said, \u2018Oh, by the way, Will taught me everything I know,\u2019 because we had that day racing together back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Total rubbish, obviously, but a lovely thing and totally unnecessary. He didn\u2019t have to say something like that. And my dad just beamed. And he could tell everybody that, until sadly he wasn\u2019t here anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMax will never know how much that meant.
