The return of “NBA on NBC” this season brought back some nostalgic vibes for many basketball fans. Now, NBC is fully playing into that nostalgia.<\/p>\n
The network announced that for its broadcasted game between the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> and San Antonio Spurs<\/a> on Tuesday, March 3, it will have a “Throwback Tuesday” telecast that aims to recreate the “NBA on NBC” broadcasts of the 1990s.<\/p>\n From the broadcasters to the graphics, Tuesday’s NBC matchup will look and sound as if its being played in the 1995-96 season.<\/p>\n Here’s what to know about NBC’s “Throwback Tuesday” broadcast for 76ers vs. Spurs.<\/p>\n MORE:\u00a0How Jonathan Kuminga has proven Hawks right in trade from Warriors<\/a><\/p>\n What is NBC’s NBA ‘Throwback Tuesday’?<\/p>\n NBC previously announced that for its 76ers vs. Spurs broadcast at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 3, it would be bringing a retro feel to the broadcast, labeling it with a “Throwback Tuesday” nickname.<\/p>\n Per SBJ,<\/a> NBC is aiming to recreate the feel of a broadcast from the 1995-96 season, which is the last era of the NBA that it held broadcasting rights. Throughout the 2000s, up until the 2025-26 season, NBC wasn’t a broadcast partner of the NBA.<\/p>\n The “Throwback Tuesday” broadcast isn’t just aiming to bring back 90s-like graphics and score bugs \u2014 it’s also going to have “grainy flashbacks” and arguably the biggest voice of the NBA in the 1990s, Bob Costas.<\/p>\n Costas, who has been a contributor to the “NBA on NBC” coverage in 2025-26, will be on play-by-play for the game, a switch-up from NBC’s traditional play-by-play announcers, Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle.<\/p>\n Other former “NBA on NBC” analysts and reporters will be working alongside Costas as the network aims to create a full 1990s feel to its 76ers vs. Spurs broadcast.<\/p>\n MORE:\u00a0When is Jayson Tatum making his return from injury?<\/a><\/p>\n NBC’s NBA ‘Throwback Tuesday’ broadcast team<\/p>\n Here’s a look at the broadcasters calling NBC’s “Throwback Tuesday” matchup.<\/p>\n Bob Costas<\/p>\n On play-by-play for the throwback matchup will be Bob Costas, the legendary sportscaster who has called everything from the Olympics and World Series to the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n Costas was the voice of the “NBA on NBC” in the 1990s,\u00a0hosting \u201cNBA Showtime\u201d and being on play-by-play. Now 73 years old, Costas is currently working in a limited contributor role to NBC’s NBA coverage in 2025-26.<\/p>\n In a comment to SBJ,<\/a> Costas said that the retro broadcast will be going all-in on the 1990s feel.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not just going to give a taste of the history, it\u2019s going to be entirely about that,\u201d Costas said in a statement, per SBJ<\/a>. \u201cAnd I think the broadcast will be conversational more so than standard play-by-play. If the game is close in the second half, we won\u2019t abandon the game, but there\u2019s going to be a lot of throwback stuff. That\u2019s what it\u2019s been labeled. And we also want to acknowledge people, not just the broadcasters, but some of the producers and directors who contributed so much to it. Nicknamed as “The Czar,” the former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks<\/a> (1983-90), Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> (1993-99) and Memphis Grizzlies<\/a> (2004-06) was also a game and studio analyst for NBC from 1990-93 and 2001-02.<\/p>\n Fratello was coaching the Cavaliers during the 1995-96 season, which is the year NBC is aiming for with its “Throwback Tuesday” broadcast, but he was a staple analyst of the network’s coverage alongside Marv Albert for many years.<\/p>\n Nowadays, Fratello is a part-time\u00a0analyst\u00a0for\u00a0FanDuel Sports Network Ohio\u00a0for the\u00a0Cavaliers\u00a0and a part-time color commentator for\u00a0FanDuel Sports Network SoCal\u00a0for the\u00a0Los Angeles Clippers<\/a>.<\/p>\n Doug Collins<\/p>\n The other analyst in the booth for Tuesday’s game will be Doug Collins, who was an analyst for NBC from 1998 to 2001.<\/p>\n A member of the 76ers from 1973-81, Collins went on to be the head coach of the Chicago Bulls<\/a> (1986-89), Detroit Pistons<\/a> (1995-98), Washington Wizards<\/a> (2001-03) and 76ers (2010-13). He is currently an analyst on NBATV and Fox Sports.<\/p>\n P.J. Carlesimo<\/p>\n The final member of the “Throwback Tuesday” studio crew will be P.J.
