West Australian travellers continue to be impacted by conflict in the Middle East, with more flights to and from Perth Airport cancelled on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Flights across the globe were grounded on Saturday when Israel and the United States bombed Iran, beginning a war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Missile strikes forced the closure of Qatari airspace, meaning Emirates and Qatar were forced to suspend all flights to and from Dubai and Doha.<\/p>\n
More than 100,000 Australians remained stranded overseas on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
While some services have resumed to help bring stranded passengers home, Perth Airport confirmed the war is still impacting routes between Perth and Dubai and Perth and Doha, with a further six flights cancelled on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Tuesday\u2019s cancellations bring the total number of services impacted since Saturday to 21.<\/p>\n
A Perth Airport spokesperson urged passengers to contact their airline for further information.<\/p>\n
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said 11,000 Australians travelled through the Middle East per day, mostly through the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation is unprecedented because in this crisis it is the hubs that we would usually rely on in a crisis, that are in crisis,\u201d Ms Wong said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe number of affected Australians dwarfs any consular operation the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has ever conducted has ever conducted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senator Wong said \u201ca small number\u201d of commercial flights had been able to depart.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, the unfortunate reality is that an immediate resolution to this situation is unlikely,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Despite the uncertainty, travel advice authority Smartraveller warned Australians stranded overseas not to voluntarily cancel flights until advice was sought from a travel agent or airline.<\/p>\n
\u201cCancelling can impact your right to a refund or rebooking. Your travel insurance may not cover voluntary cancellations,\u201d the update read.<\/p>\n
It said many airline and travel agent call centres were \u201coverwhelmed\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re not due to travel in the next 48 hours, wait to be contacted by your airline,\u201d the update read.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are travelling in the next 48 hours and have not been contacted, call your airline or travel agent to confirm your flights.\u201d<\/p>\n
