The first attacks on Iran came on March 1, closing Middle East airspace and causing chaos throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Price said he and his team had no advance warning of missiles filling the skies.<\/p>\n<p>It was, he said, \u201cpure luck\u201d that most air freighters carrying GP people and gear had departed hours before the conflict exploded. All the gear being taken by ocean freighters to Australia and the next two Asian grand prix venues \u2013 China and Japan \u2013 had already sailed.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/motorsport\/bang-for-your-buck-how-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-australian-grand-prix-ticket-20260225-p5o5cd.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hLTVHY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Oscar Piastri greets fans at Albert Park - it can be a rush to land a spot by the fence.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772647879_438_e33b7a44128540b1c8130d50c3b6cb9ba3ba806f.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 jiJqza\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, significant numbers of staff and racing team members were still \u201cbouncing through the Middle East\u201d on their way to Australia as the war machine revved up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey literally missed it [the outbreak of war] by about two hours, I think, really the actual kick-off,\u201d Price said.<\/p>\n<p>One planeload of critical high-tech equipment for one of the race teams, however, didn\u2019t make it out before air traffic was grounded.<\/p>\n<p>Frantic arrangements (\u201cwe have a lot of contacts\u201d, said Price, a little mysteriously) meant an air freighter with the gear on board finally arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHL contacts and the people there [in the Middle East] have managed to get that freight pulled out from the location it was in, put on an aircraft and sent down here. What\u2019s on that craft?
