{"id":519473,"date":"2026-03-05T03:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T03:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/519473\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T03:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T03:53:11","slug":"tasmanian-racing-minister-jane-howlett-faces-grilling-over-offices-knowledge-of-election-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/519473\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasmanian Racing Minister Jane Howlett faces grilling over office&#8217;s knowledge of election message"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tasmania&#8217;s racing minister has attempted to bat away Labor questioning over what her office knew about an apparent breach to election caretaker conventions as &#8220;nothing but a misogynist attack&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Jane Howlett has continued to face extensive questioning in parliament over a text message sent from Tasracing to racing industry participants, along with a public statement, during last year&#8217;s election campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The message from the government-owned business spoke favourably of the Liberals&#8217; signature TasInsure policy and was later retracted due to concerns about it breaching election guidelines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Caretaker conventions outline that government resources should not be used for party political purposes. (Facebook: Jane Howlett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Labor argued she had misled parliament, but Ms Howlett stood by her argument that her office did not know of the communications method.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Nothing but a misogynist attack&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In answers to questions on Thursday, Ms Howlett said her senior adviser, Mr Gaetani, provided information to stakeholders about the TasInsure policy on July 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My adviser takes full responsibility for not understanding the context in which he answered stakeholder questions about the policy,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Labor&#8217;s Ella Haddad asked why Ms Howlett&#8217;s office did not think Tasracing intended to communicate the contents of the briefing publicly \u2014 including positive comments \u2014 given Mr Gaetani was in contact with Tasracing&#8217;s public relations consultant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-04\/tasracing-jane-howlett-office-caretaker-convention\/106406032\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Luke says ok&#8217;: Minister&#8217;s office aware of &#8216;egregious&#8217; election message<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In the middle of another Tasmanian election campaign, the state&#8217;s racing participants received a text message from a government body promoting a Liberal policy \u2014 an apparent breach of caretaker convention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Howlett then argued the questioning was misogynistic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is nothing but a misogynist attack,&#8221; she told Ms Haddad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;How do you feel as International Women&#8217;s Week, Ms Haddad? How do you feel?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Are you inspiring women to enter parliament?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Haddad told parliament that the comments &#8220;devalue&#8221; the experiences of misogyny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;International Women&#8217;s Day means not treating us softer as others, it means treating us the same, holding us to account just the same as I would any male minister,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To misuse and to weaponise a word like misogynistic actually does a disservice, not only to all women, but to men as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Rockliff also launched an attack on Labor, claiming the party was attacking Ms Howlett due to the government&#8217;s upcoming ban on greyhound racing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You are being played by cashed-up mainland greyhound thugs,&#8221; he told Mr Willie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Mainland greyhound thugs that want to stop the ban on greyhounds, they are playing with him, and you are dancing to [former Labor leader Dean Winter]&#8217;s tune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s what it&#8217;s all about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rockliff &#8216;satisfied with the explanation&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Rockliff sent a letter to Mr Willie on February 4 to confirm that the head of the state service had looked into the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am satisfied with the explanation provided to the [head of the state service] and the manner in which the Tasracing board responded to the issue,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am also satisfied with the minister&#8217;s assurance that the minister did not direct the company or its officers to distribute the material.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with long black hair and a striped black and white blazer sits on a green chair\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/a36b7e7ff46106cbdb914fc4e76859fe.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Labor has called on Jane Howlett to resign. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Willie said the parliament needed to get to the bottom of how taxpayer resources were used to send out a message that spoke favourably of a Liberal policy during an election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;How did Tasracing get that information? Why was the minister&#8217;s office involved in communicating with a communications firm that was working for Tasracing?&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC understands the firm contacted Mr Gaetani as a courtesy that is extended to relevant ministers&#8217; offices prior to communications being sent out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking in parliament on Wednesday evening, Labor racing spokesperson Dean Winter said there were still unanswered questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I find the idea that the minister for racing didn&#8217;t know about the text message during the election campaign difficult to believe, extremely difficult to believe,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Labor requests RTI document<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC received the emails under RTI on December 23, before making follow-up RTI requests in an attempt to disclose further information about how the Tasracing message came to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These did not reveal further information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tasracing did not publish <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/b51b54f19590c3099ca5f11655e27160\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/downloadobject\/106418870\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the RTI<\/a> on a public log, nor would it provide the RTI to Labor upon request on Wednesday and Thursday, instead responding:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Tasracing is not in a position to forward RTI information and has no further comment to make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">RTIs are generally placed on public logs by government departments, but few government businesses do this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">RTIs are public documents and are usually provided to interested parties upon request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Thursday, Labor moved a motion in parliament to order the emails be released.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A grand sandstone building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/f8c636fa1186157ad49f0fe1bfd6bda3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Labor has moved a motion in parliament to order emails be released.
