{"id":52049,"date":"2025-08-08T04:27:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/52049\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T04:27:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:27:07","slug":"oprahs-book-club-has-a-new-pick-but-its-from-2007-see-the-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/52049\/","title":{"rendered":"Oprah&#8217;s Book Club has a new pick, but it&#8217;s from 2007: See the title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newly released books often dominate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2025\/06\/10\/oprah-winfrey-book-club-wally-lamb\/84129760007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">celebrity book clubs<\/a>, but every now and then, an older title slips through the cracks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2025\/07\/16\/oprah-gayle-king-friend-blue-origin-flight\/85245107007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a> is the champion of one of those books this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/159146\/bridge-of-sighs-by-richard-russo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBridge of Sighs\u201d by Richard Russo,<\/a> originally published by Penguin Random House in 2007, is the August pick for Oprah\u2019s Book Club. Russo is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of \u201cEmpire Falls\u201d and over a dozen other works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridge of Sighs\u201d follows a small-town American man and his wife who are preparing to embark on a family vacation to Italy. Winfrey calls it a \u201cclassic summer read.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oprah\u2019s Book Club pick for August: \u2018Bridge of Sighs\u2019 by Richard Russo<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridge of Sighs\u201d is a multigenerational story about family and destiny in the Lynch family, convenience store owners in small-town New York. Protagonist Louis Charles (known as \u201cLucy\u201d) is a 60-year-old man excavating his hometown and family history through old memories, including an old friend (and rival for his wife\u2019s affection) who lives in Venice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book has everything you need for a classic summer read \u2013 romance, unrequited love, life-long friendships, and of course \u2013 epic family drama,\u201d Winfrey said in a statement. \u201cIf you\u2019re a fan of Richard Russo or discovering him for the first time, here\u2019s your opportunity to read one of America\u2019s most beloved writers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Winfrey has chosen an older book for her monthly book club pick. In January, she chose Eckhart Tolle\u2019s \u201cA New Earth: Awakening to Your Life\u2019s Purpose\u201d when it was reissued for its 10th anniversary edition. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/entertainment\/books\/2024\/10\/08\/oprahs-book-club-complete-list\/2210970001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">picked the same book<\/a> in 2008. Other recent picks, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2025\/07\/08\/oprah-book-club-july-culpability\/84504994007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI family thriller \u201cCulpability\u201d<\/a> by Bruce Holsinger and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2025\/05\/13\/oprah-book-club-may-2025-pick-ocean-vuong\/83598148007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Emperor of Gladness\u201d<\/a> by Ocean Vuong, came out this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, of course, a profound honor to be chosen for Oprah\u2019s Book Club,\u201d Russo said in a statement. \u201cBut to be chosen for a novel written two decades earlier?
