{"id":520673,"date":"2026-03-05T16:48:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/520673\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T16:48:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:48:11","slug":"chiba-exhibition-explores-the-home-as-both-origin-and-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/520673\/","title":{"rendered":"Chiba exhibition explores the &#8220;home as both origin and destination&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Design studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/akasaki-vanhuyse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse<\/a> has presented the Home-Home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/exhibitions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition<\/a>, which showcased works by 16 designers and artists in a modernist house in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/chiba\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chiba<\/a>, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Home-Home was on display inside the 1974 Bundle Gallery house, designed by Japanese architect Ren Suzuki, who worked with architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/le-corbusier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Corbusier<\/a> in the 1950s before returning to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>It featured works by both local and international designers, some of whom were showing in the country for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302323 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of house in Japan\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Home-Home was on show in a house from 1974<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Home\u2013Home is a self-initiated show where we invited designers connected to Japan to exhibit alongside us,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akasakivanhuyse.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse<\/a> co-founder Astrid Vanhuyse told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to explore the idea of home as both origin and destination, creating a dialogue between the works, the architecture and the lived experiences behind them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition was spread across five rooms of the house, which the curators chose because of its intimate feel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1135.jpg\" alt=\"Pallets made from aluminium\" width=\"1774\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Aluminium pallets were stacked to form displays<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It reflects the mix of Japanese design value and modernism we were interested in,&#8221; Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse co-founder Kenta Akasaki told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The home setting made the exhibition feel intimate and personal, rather than presenting it in a white gallery space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Lamp by Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse&#8217;s WA Lamp was on display<\/p>\n<p>Akasaki and Vanhuyse arranged the pieces around Bundle Gallery so that they would look harmonious in the space, which features striking design details, including a large hexagonal fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>Among the works on show was the studio&#8217;s own WA Lamp, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/22\/wa-table-lamp-akasaki-vanhuyse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made from parts of decommissioned Tokyo trains<\/a>. Home-Home also featured pieces by designers including <a href=\"https:\/\/alexandragerber.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandra Gerber<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/koheikojima.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kohei Kojima<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rikako-nagashima.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rikako Nagashima<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wadeandleta.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wade and Leta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/22\/wa-table-lamp-akasaki-vanhuyse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/wa-table-lamp-design-akasaki-vanhuyse_dezeen_sq-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"WA table lamp designed by Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse for Tokyu Corporation\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> WA lamp by Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse is crafted from decommissioned Tokyo train parts\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group came together organically through friendships and ongoing conversations with designers who have a connection to Japan,&#8221; Vanhuyse explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We selected practices across disciplines, from furniture and product to visual art and photography, and across generations, all sharing a sensitivity to context in their work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302324 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Daybed on wooden floor\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A daybed was made from pallets and topped with cushions<\/p>\n<p>The designs on show included lighting and furniture as well as artworks and homeware, shown alongside the existing gallery interior.<\/p>\n<p>Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse created display spaces using aluminium pallets, which were stacked to create different forms, including a coffee table, a dining table and a cushion-topped daybed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302317 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Lamps behind fireplace\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Bundle Gallery features a hexagonal fireplace<\/p>\n<p>The concept of showing design in places like Bundle Gallery, which is rarely open to the public, has become more popular in recent years and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/04\/16\/ten-enviable-apartments-unlocked-milan-design-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seen across Milan design week in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While it is still a more unusual concept in Japan, Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse believe that the format can create a memorable visitor experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Akasaki-Vanhuyse-home-home_dezeen_2364_col_28-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Akasaki &amp; Vanhuyse Home-Home\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Bundle Gallery building was designed by Ren Suzuki<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These types of shows offer a full experience for the visitors, they can enjoy the pieces and the architecture,&#8221; Akasaki concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Japan, some stores and cultural spaces have a strong authentic atmosphere, yet for design shows, it is still quite rare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by Kohei Omachi.<\/p>\n<p>Home-Home was on view at Bundle Gallery, Chiba, from 20 to 23 February 2026.
