New footage from K\u2019gari (formerly Fraser Island) has reignited warnings for visitors after a dingo was filmed approaching a fisherman knee deep in water at Eli Creek.<\/p>\n

The video, shared on the Facebook page Indefinite Leave, shows the man unaware as the wild dog moves in close.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of you will look at this and say, what\u2019s the problem, it didn\u2019t do anything,\u201d the post reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s many issues in this video. First, it should never be wanting to approach a human. It\u2019s not their normal instinct, not a normal behaviour of a wild dingo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post goes on to detail the animal\u2019s unusual behaviour, noting its tail was \u201chigh in a curved position\u201d, a sign of heightened awareness and excitement.<\/p>\n

The fisherman eventually turned and used his rod to move the dingo on, but the footage has sparked concern that the male dingo, identifiable by a blue tag, could be \u201cthe next problem within Eli Creek region\u201d.<\/p>\n

Days earlier, another video captured a dingo running around two men who were kicking sand at it before a bystander intervened to separate the parties.<\/p>\n

Such incidents highlight the ongoing challenges of managing interactions between humans and the island\u2019s wild dog population.<\/p>\n

K\u2019gari\u2019s dingoes have made headlines in recent years due to a series of dangerous encounters.<\/p>\n

In January, Canadian backpacker Piper James, 19, was found dead on the island\u2019s eastern beach, surrounded by a pack of dingoes.<\/p>\n

A coroner\u2019s report found injuries consistent with dingo bites, though drowning was the most likely cause of death. Following the tragedy, several dingoes from the pack were euthanased to protect public safety.<\/p>\n

Authorities and experts stress that most dingo-human conflicts stem from human behaviour rather than hunger.<\/p>\n

Filmmaker Harry Vincent, who captured footage of dingoes scavenging an unattended campsite, said it had become \u201cvery apparent\u201d that the pack had \u201cclearly lost its fear of humans\u201d.<\/p>\n

He noted the animals were opportunistic, taking advantage of food left accessible by campers.<\/p>\n

Senior Queensland ranger Linda Behrendorff said proper food storage was crucial.<\/p>\n

\u201cDingoes don\u2019t differentiate between food and rubbish, and they can start approaching people for food which puts dingoes and people at risk,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Simple precautions, including burying bait at least 50cm deep and locking food in vehicles, remain the most effective ways to reduce risk.<\/p>\n

K\u2019gari is home to about 150 human residents and a genetically distinct population of dingoes.<\/p>\n
