Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> forward Evgeni Malkin<\/a> received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for slashing Buffalo Sabres<\/a> defenseman Rasmus Dahlin<\/a> in the head during the second period of Thursday’s game.<\/p>\n

Dahlin cross-checked Malkin near the Sabres’ net, and Malkin responded by swinging his stick into Dahlin’s face. Malkin then tried to drop his gloves and fight, but officials stepped in and had Malkin ejected from the ice.<\/p>\n

Dahlin received a minor penalty for cross-checking.<\/p>\n

The slash by Malkin could warrant supplementary discipline from the league. He has been suspended twice previously in his career — a one-game ban for roughing in 2009 and a four-game suspension for cross-checking in 2022 — so there is history that the NHL’s Player Safety Department could factor into a decision.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old Malkin has been having a tremendous season with 13 goals and 47 points in 45 games as the Penguins are in a tight race for playoff position in the Metropolitan Division. Though they currently hold the No. 2 seed, the New York Islanders<\/a> are tied with them on points, but Pittsburgh has two games in hand.<\/p>\n

Losing Malkin for any length of time would be another blow to the Penguins’ top-six forward depth. They are already without captain Sidney Crosby<\/a> while he rehabs a lower-body injury suffered while representing Team Canada at the Winter Olympics last month.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh initially said Crosby would be out four weeks.<\/p>\n
