The owner of one of the world\u2019s largest pornography websites has begun blocking Australian users in protest of the country\u2019s new age verification laws. <\/p>\n
Aylo, a Canadian company operating explicit websites including Pornhub, RedTube, YouPorn and Tube8, has placed restrictions on access by Australian users.<\/p>\n
This follows the new age verification laws due to take effect from March 9 \u2013 which Aylo is directly challenging. <\/p>\n
These laws reflect phase 2 of the Online Safety Codes registered by the eSafety Commissioner to mandate strict age verification on materials identified as unsuitable for Australian users under the age of 18. <\/p>\n
The new law requires websites hosting pornography and age-restricted material to implement safety measures including facial age estimation, digital wallets and photo ID. <\/p>\n
These age verification methods are already in place and used by major social media platforms across Australia under Australia\u2019s under-16s social media ban. <\/p>\n
Non-compliance carries penalties of up to $49.5m per breach. <\/p>\n
Pornhub is Aylo\u2019s most popular website \u2013 ranking 15th as most visited in the world \u2013 but has not been totally blocked in Australia.<\/p>\n
But several other platforms owned by Aylo, including RedTube, said it is \u201cnot currently accepting new account registration in your region\u201d. <\/p>\n
The company has previously taken similar action in the United Kingdom and France, but Aylo has a problematic reputation. <\/p>\n
It has previously been found by the US Department of Justice in having profited from sex-trafficking proceeds. <\/p>\n
