So I was really hoping that I was going to be able to do it this year.

“To be able to do it so early on in the year and it was so unexpected. And yeah, I’m just filled with so much joy.”

After beginning the week in the qualifying rounds, the 21-year-old has now won four consecutive matches to set up a third-round meeting with 17th seed Clara Tauson, who beat Yulia Putintseva.

Joining her in the third round at Indian Wells was fellow Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic, who outplayed No.30 seed Wang Xinyu for the loss of just four games.

Tomljanovic’s 6-3 6-1 win, which saw her go unbroken throughout the match, ensures her deepest run at a WTA 1000 event since Cincinnati in 2022.

She will face No.7 seed Jasmine Paolini for a place in the fourth round at Indian Wells for just the second time since she debuted in the Californian desert in 2009.

Gibson’s performance, meanwhile, marks an incredible debut at WTA 1000 level, and improves her 2026 win loss record to 15-5.

She was much steadier and played with controlled aggression against the higher-ranked Alexandrova, who struggled with errors and lost four points in a row in the penultimate game to hand Gibson a chance to serve for the match.

The young Aussie stepped up to the line and calmly completed the job, before joyous celebrations.

“It feels really awesome. I think going into that match today, I knew it was going to be a really challenging one. She’s got a really amazing game, a big game,” Gibson said.

“But that being said, I knew that from a lot of the matches that I’ve played over the last couple of months, I was sort of able to see that my game was really competing with some really high-level players.

“So I think I was able to take a lot of confidence from that and going into the match today, I just wanted to go out there, enjoy it.

“But I was extremely stoked to have got that win for sure.”

At the same time Gibson was progressing, fellow Australian Kim Birrell put in a gallant performance against top-10 star Victoria Mboko.

In a rematch of their Adelaide International semifinal, Birrell pushed the Canadian phenom to the limit, leading by a break in both sets and serving for the second set before the in-form Mboko steadied to prevail 6-4 7-6(5) at Stadium 2.

At Stadium 3, it was a similar scoreline for Adam Walton, who gave 25th seed Learner Tien a scare before eventually going down to the AO 2026 quarterfinalist 7-6(3) 7-6(8).

Later on Saturday (AEDT), 29th seed Maya Joint came incredibly close to following Gibson and Tomljanovic into the third round, before falling in three tight sets to Jaqueline Cristian – a rematch of last year’s WTA Rabat final, which Joint won.

The Aussie teen made a scorching start and later held three match points in the 10th game of the final set, before bowing out 0-6 6-2 7-5.

            Aussies in action: Indian Wells

DAY 3 RESULTS

Women’s singles, second round

[Q] Talia Gibson (AUS) d [11] Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3 7-5
Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS) d [30] Wang Xinyu (CHN) 6-3 6-1
Jaqueline Cristian (ROU) d [29] Maya Joint (AUS) 0-6 6-2 7-5
[10] Victoria Mboko (CAN) d Kimberly Birrell (AUS) 6-4 7-6(5)

Men’s singles, second round

[25] Learner Tien (USA) d Adam Walton (AUS) 7-6(3) 7-6(8)

COMING UP

Women’s singles, second round

[Q] Storm Hunter (AUS) v [12] Belinda Bencic (SUI)

Men’s singles, second round

[6] Alex de Minaur (AUS) v Sebastian Korda (USA)
[Q] Rinky Hijikata (AUS) v [20] Luciano Darderi (ITA)

Women’s singles, third round

[Q] Talia Gibson (AUS) d [17] Clara Tauson (DEN)
Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS) d [7] Jasmine Paolini (ITA)

Save over 60% off a 12-month subscription and have access to the ATP, WTA, Australian Pro Tour & Junior Nationals with beIN SPORTS.

Talia Gibson is enjoying a dream week in the Californian desert.
