Nearly eleven years on, it&#8217;s a vastly different scene for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But for others in the Asian confederation, like their opponents at the Women&#8217;s Asian Cup in Sydney tonight, South Korea, their own fight is just beginning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Get the latest:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/sport\/audio\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Listen to ABC Sport<\/a> for coverage of the 2026 AFC Women&#8217;s Asian Cup in Australia, and keep up to date <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/sport\/football\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Matildas to banish memories of 2022<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The South Koreans <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-01\/south-korea-asian-cup-boycott-would-be-devastating\/106293118\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106293118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatened to boycott this tournament<\/a>, due to &#8220;harsh and unreasonable conditions&#8221; under the nation&#8217;s federation, which was resolved before the tournament kicked off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With tonight&#8217;s game being staged on International Women&#8217;s Day, Matildas vice-captain Steph Catley says the Asian Cup can provide an important space to highlight inequities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The nations that don&#8217;t have the privileges that we have, we haven&#8217;t always had that either,&#8221; she said ahead of the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And it does drain you, and you don&#8217;t want anyone to have to be going through that for basic, simple rights as a footballer. For access to change rooms or a pitch that&#8217;s not got holes in it or whatever it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This platform just shows how incredible women&#8217;s football is, and hopefully that&#8217;s enough eventually for these nations to take notice and to give their teams the basic standards of what they need to go out and perform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Matildas &#8216;learned from that moment&#8217; in 2022<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The South Koreans are ranked 21 in the world, just six places behind Australia, and they knocked the Matildas out in the quarterfinals in the 2022 Asian Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now they face off in what is the Matildas&#8217; biggest test of the group stage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" South Korea celebrate their 1-0 victory while Matildas' Alanna Kennedy shows dejection\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e9e846b59c0040cb10483f7f576256ee.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">South Korea celebrates beating the Matildas in 2022. (Getty: Thananuwat Srirasant)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With that game in particular, we were quite wasteful from memory and didn&#8217;t finish our chances and against a team like Korea, they take advantage,&#8221; Catley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve definitely learned from that moment and been holding on to it, and we want to make sure we do everything we can to not feel that again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The two sides met in friendlies in Australia last year, which the Matildas won.
