Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss said flyhalf Carter Gordon will take great confidence from scoring their match-winning try, handing the ACT Brumbies a first defeat of the Super Rugby season.<\/p>\n
Gordon<\/a> scored after the fulltime hooter to lift the visitors to an upset 34-31 victory in Canberra on Saturday, capping a dramatic game which was delayed at the start by 90 minutes because of lightning strikes.<\/p>\n The Brumbies<\/a> dominated much of the second half and led by 11 points with five minutes to play but couldn’t prevent late tries to Reds<\/a> wing Filipo Daugunu<\/a> and Gordon.<\/p>\n Former Melbourne Rebels and Wallabies playmaker Gordon, who is returning after a two-year stint in rugby league, finished off a sweeping attack that began with a 50m burst from fullback Jock Campbell<\/a>.<\/p>\n Kiss said on Saturday Gordon proved he was back and firing in rugby union by dashing around opposite Tane Edmed to score.<\/p>\n “For him to be able to take the bull by the horns in that moment, it was certainly very good for us,” Kiss said.<\/p>\n “I thought he had an impressive game. To get a return like that, taking the tryline, I think is a good thing for him for sure.”<\/p>\n It was a second straight win for the mid-table Reds and ended their five-match losing streak against the team from Canberra.<\/p>\n Securing a bonus point meant the Brumbies remain top of the standings after four rounds, one point clear of New Zealand’s Waikato Chiefs<\/a>, who have also won three from four.<\/p>\n Brumbies prop James Slipper<\/a> played his 202nd Super Rugby match, moving him level with former Canterbury Crusaders<\/a> great Wyatt Crockett<\/a> for the competition’s most games.<\/p>\n Retired Wallaby Slipper said he was “very proud” to reach the milestone.<\/p>\n “But, mate, I’d trade it all in to get a result tonight. Just the way that unfolded there at the end kind of put a dampener on things.”<\/p>\n
