{"id":528081,"date":"2026-03-09T04:20:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T04:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/528081\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T04:20:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T04:20:14","slug":"shane-van-gisbergen-phoenix-nacar-cup-series-race-report-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/528081\/","title":{"rendered":"Shane van Gisbergen Phoenix NACAR Cup Series race report 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SHANE van Gisbergen has made a remarkable comeback drive in the NASCAR Cup Series at Phoenix, recovering from two spins and a brake pedal that was falling off to claim 11th.<\/p>\n<p>He was in line for a shock top ten until running out of brakes in the closing laps.<\/p>\n<p>The result was his best to date in the Cup Series on the one-mile oval.<\/p>\n<p>With penalties applied to multiple drivers, SVG\u2019s 18th qualifying result became 15th for the initial green flag of the race, where he held station for the opening laps.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening stage break after 60 of 252 laps, van Gisbergen placed 14th with the green and white chequered flag claimed by Ryan Blaney.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Busch suffered a flat tyre on lap 93 and hit the wall, and while he was limping back to the pits, van Gisbergen had his own flat without warning, spinning at turn 4.<\/p>\n<p>With the car refusing to refire, the #97 Chevrolet lost a lap to the field before pitting twice under its own caution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/1-18-scale-2022-sandown-super2-50-holden-commodore-vf-jack-perkins-model?utm_source=SRBuyButton&amp;utm_medium=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ACD18H22VF_1_1024x1024.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The race restarted on lap 101 with the Kiwi placed 36th, the seventh of the cars a lap down on the leader.<\/p>\n<p>The yellows flashed on again quickly for a Daniel Su\u00e1rez spin that also swept up Chase Elliot.<\/p>\n<p>Then, Chase Briscoe\u2019s wretched season continued when he suffered a failure, which ended heavily against the turn four wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/v8-sleuth-magazine-issue-2?utm_source=SRBuyButton&amp;utm_medium=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/v8-sleuth-magazine-issue-2_1024x1024.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Van Gisbergen caught a break back onto the lead lap when Noah Gragson pounded the wall on lap 158, with William Byson, Connor Zilisch and Michael McDowell subsequently suffering flat tyres.<\/p>\n<p>Following another epic restart, van Gisbergen claimed 20th in the stage, which was won by Christopher Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Restarting P20 for the final leg, SVG gained one place on lap 211 when Ryan Preece spun after contact with Zilisch in the dogleg.<\/p>\n<p>After stopping, van Gisbergen restarted 22nd, and possibly ran over debris when multiple cars tangled on the next restart, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-2400-Austin-Cindric\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Cindric<\/a>, Ross Chastain, Joey Logano, Anthony Alfredo and Bubba Wallace.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A huge hit for Austin Cindric and Anthony Alfredo.
