The unfolding conflict in the Middle East has already caused major disruptions to the motorsport world, and more could be coming.<\/p>\n

With the United States and Israel launching air strikes against Iran and the conflict spreading across the region to the likes of UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and more, the possibility of racing in those countries in the short term is unlikely.<\/p>\n

While F1 is yet to make a call on next month\u2019s races in Sakhir and Jeddah, the FIA World Endurance Championship has already announced it has postponed the season opener in Qatar.<\/p>\n

The Qatar 1812KM at Lusail was scheduled to start the season on March 26-28, but with the back and forth missile strikes taking place for more than a week and no signs of stopping by the end of the month, the call was made it was too risky to race.<\/p>\n

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President, F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de l\u2019Automobile said the event is hoped to be rescheduled later in the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe safety and wellbeing of our community will always be the FIA\u2019s first priority, and I thank our Member Club the Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation, Lusail International Circuit, the ACO and our championship colleagues for the measured and collaborative approach that has led to this decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the opening event of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Qatar 1812km holds a special place for many fans, drivers and teams alike, and we will work closely with all involved to reschedule the race for later in the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FIA continues to monitor developments across the region and our thoughts remain with all those affected by these recent events as we hope for calm, safety and a return to stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the WEC season will now start in Imola on April 17-19, a lot more mystery surrounds the future of Formula 1.<\/p>\n

One thing F1 does have up its sleeve is time with the remainder of March featuring China and Japan, ensuring the first race in the Middle East is not until Bahrain on April 10-12.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia follows a week later before the Miami Grand Prix in the first weekend of May.<\/p>\n

No decision has been made with the F1, FIA and FOM keeping a watching breif on the matter.<\/p>\n

While the race is not until April 10-12, a call must be made earlier due to the logistics required following Suzuka.<\/p>\n

A meeting was held between F1 CEO Stefano Domenicalli and the teams during the Australian Grand Prix weekend.<\/p>\n

If it was deemed too unsafe to race at Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, where F1 completed a race weekend in 2022 despite a nearby missile strike at a Jeddah Aramco facility, the question will be can replacement races be scheduled in time?<\/p>\n

European venues that performed the fill-in role during the COVID-impacted seasons, Portimao and historic Imola, have been brought up.<\/p>\n

However, if the Middle East races are cancelled, at this stage it is more likely they will not be replaced at all.<\/p>\n

There is not a signficant appitite within the paddock to replace them after a big off-season getting the new cars ready and the general flat-out nature of a 24-race season.<\/p>\n

While it would see two less races take place, the FOM\u2019s television contracts would already be fulfilled with 22 races unlike the COVID era.<\/p>\n

It would also give teams and drivers extra time to understand the new cars, while the financial loss is not expected to be significant.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all kind of depends: do the races get replaced, do they get delayed, and the economics around that,\u201d McLaren CEO Zak Brown said. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think, given what\u2019s going on, we\u2019re not bothered if it does have a little bit of a financial impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

But no F1 at all in April would leave a major void in the motor racing world.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur next three races are in Australia, China and Japan and not in the Middle East \u2014 those races are not for a number of weeks,\u201d an F1 statement said.<\/p>\n
