A co-worker of a good Samaritan security guard allegedly stabbed to death defending a teenager has provided a sad update about his colleague.<\/p>\n
Off-duty security guard Aidan Becker, 22, was allegedly killed attempting to help a 14-year boy from being robbed by a group on Bridge Inn Rd about 5.50pm on Friday.<\/p>\n
His Alfred Hospital colleague Hubert Sola told 9News Mr Becker was wearing a stab-proof vest as part of his job that day, and had taken it off when he finished work.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe actually took off his vest after a shift and then came to be stabbed without wearing the vest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere needs to be less talking and more action.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery single community is getting affected by this, something needs to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
A teenage boy accused of Mr Becker\u2019s murder faced court sporting an injured hand. <\/p>\n
The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in a Childrens Court on Monday afternoon just hours after police laid charges of murder and armed robbery. <\/p>\n
The teenager was arrested on Friday evening following a horror machete attack near the Mernda Railway Station in Mernda. <\/p>\n
According to Victoria Police the teenager was taken to hospital, where he remained over the weekend, under police guard.<\/p>\n
During a brief filing hearing at court over a video link from a police station, he sat slumped in a chair wearing a black jumper and black shorts, with bandages wrapped around his left hand. <\/p>\n
His father appeared on the video link watching the proceedings. <\/p>\n
The court was told the teenager would be remanded to a youth detention centre to return to court in June alongside his child co-accused. <\/p>\n
The boy\u2019s lawyer, Andrew McGregor, asked the court to note the hospital had provided \u201csome recommendations about pain medication\u201d. <\/p>\n
Four teenage males, aged between 16 and 18, have now each been charged with murder and armed robbery over the incident. <\/p>\n
\ufeffMike Pikos, 18, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday and was remanded to reappear in court in June. <\/p>\n
In a statement, the Alfred Hospital, where Mr Becker worked, described him as a \u201cquiet hero\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are deeply saddened by the passing of young security officer, Aidan Becker,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe will be remembered for being full of life, and for his positive energy, kindness and dedication. He was a quiet hero who gave his all for those around him.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Sunday, the Victorian government announced its crime prevention Violence Reduction Unit would be deploying to Mernda alongside Victoria Police and the Department of Education. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy thoughts are with the family of the man who was brutally stabbed in Mernda \u2013 our hearts break for them,\u201d Premier Jacinta Allan said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe created the Violence Reduction Unit for this reason, to work with the community in the aftermath of violence and prevent further trauma.<\/p>\n
