{"id":530905,"date":"2026-03-10T11:23:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T11:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/530905\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T11:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T11:23:09","slug":"dyspraxic-teen-says-vr-has-improved-coordination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/530905\/","title":{"rendered":"Dyspraxic teen says VR has improved coordination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A teenager living with dyspraxia says his movement and spatial awareness is improving thanks to virtual reality (VR).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sixteen-year-old Frankie Farrow, from Crediton, Devon, was diagnosed with the neurological condition that affects physical coordination at the age of eight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But now Frankie believes that his hand-eye coordination is better and his reactions are faster after playing a VR game as part of a study at the University of Exeter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Academics at the university said the technology might be &#8220;an effective way to improve motor control in children and adolescents with dyspraxia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve definitely adapted my life around it [dyspraxia], but there&#8217;s certain things&#8230; that can be tricky,&#8221; Frankie explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I have a poor sense of coordination and I can&#8217;t do certain things as easily with my hands, and I&#8217;m just not very aware of my surroundings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Frankie, who is studying at a local college, said his movement was &#8220;pretty normal&#8221; but he did bump into things &#8220;quite a lot&#8221; and &#8220;sometimes I&#8217;ll drop things&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dyspraxia &#8211; also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/developmental-coordination-disorder-dyspraxia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the NHS;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;the NHS&quot;}\" class=\"link \">the NHS<\/a> &#8211; affects movement and coordination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is believed to impact about 5% of children and adults, including at least two pupils out of every class of 30 in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Every individual is different, but people living with it can struggle to do things such as grasp, kick or throw, as well as walk, run and jump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This, in turn, could affect confidence and quality of life, experts said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A man with short dark hair is sat on a sofa looking at virtual reality on his phone. We cannot see the phone screen, but he is monitoring the VR that the participants see on a headset. \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/f8db041095945a667e5d8df2a01dacbe.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>University of Exeter PhD student Mohammed Alharbi says using VR gave children with dyspraxia &#8220;more confidence&#8221; as skills improve [BBC]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mohammed Alharbi, a PhD student at the University of Exeter, has been spearheading the research &#8220;especially in schools or in the community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said: &#8220;The VR game gives the children in the study confidence and motivation to participate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;But I think the most important thing that children report is that using the VR is more fun and they&#8217;re more motivated to play it, rather than, say, do repetitive exercises that physios often suggest for dyspraxia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The study involves a virtual reality game called Beatsaber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In it, they wear a VR headset and see blocks fly towards them which they must hit back to the beat of music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Frankie is one of 27 young people aged 10 to 16 currently working with the university to find out what impact immersive virtual reality can have on dyspraxia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers said it was the first study of its kind involving children and young people with the condition and virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They claimed that those using the VR for 30 minutes a day for a week showed improvements, particularly in upper body dexterity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Gavin Buckingham is a cognitive psychologist in the Department of Public Health and Sports Science at the University of Exeter, and the project supervisor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said: &#8220;These findings provide some promising early evidence that virtual reality games like Beatsaber might be an effective way to improve motor control in children and adolescents with dyspraxia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The next step would be to investigate whether virtual reality can help children enjoy a broader range of sporting activities at a young age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A woman with a nose ring and silver ear rings is standing in a sunny street in a town in Devon.
