Read this in the Archbishop Harold Holmes<\/a> voice: Jack White is pissed off. Several days after speaking to<\/a> the Guardian about his songwriting process, during which he discussed being uninterested in the autobiographical style of writing in the \u201cTaylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired breakups,\u201d the musician published a now-deleted statement on Instagram to decry media outlets who used it as an opportunity to write headlines that conflated his words into insulting Swift. \u201cI didn\u2019t say that I think Taylor Swift\u2019s music was \u2018boring\u2019 or whatever click bait the net is trying to scrape together,\u201d he explained. White, who has rarely engaged with the press in recent years \u2014 his Rock Hall induction speech<\/a> was a lovely exception \u2014 says experiences like this made him \u201cless and less interested in doing interviews\u201d amid the \u201cage of this massive demand for click bait and content.\u201d For example, White told the Guardian that he finds it a bit boring to write about himself. \u201cIf it\u2019s something really painful,\u201d he put it, \u201cI\u2019m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over.\u201d The inevitable \u201cslams\u201d and \u201cblasts\u201d headlines ensued.<\/p>\n

The modern news cycle has encouraged White to \u201cnot want to answer questions with any sort of romance or passion or reflection as I\u2019m too busy having to worry about accidentally triggering nonsense like this from so called \u2018journalists\u2019 and \u2018editors.\u2019\u201d (He has taken a particular liking in recent months to sharing oft-humorous<\/a> political screeds on social media.) \u201cThis has always been a problem as it encourages artists to give \u2018safe\u2019 answers to any question and stifles artistic vision and imagination and pushes all of us to not share anything interesting,\u201d White added, \u201cwhich was one of the points I made about keeping private things private in that same interview.\u201d We\u2019ll just keep minding our business and press play on No Name until this blows over.<\/p>\n
