(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Exploration is a bit like horse racing,&#8221; Ms Wellman said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you&#8217;re betting, you wouldn&#8217;t pick a random horse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You study the form, the jockey, the stable it comes from, the barrier it&#8217;s running from, and use all those things to decide where to invest your money. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Exploration is kind of the same. You study the ground, the neighbours around it, and the company \u2014 do they have the money to drill and to continue to drill? (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Association of Mining and Exploration Companies chief executive Warren Pearce said investment had kept pace with metal prices. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian dollar gold price surpassed <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-01\/australian-dollar-gold-price-passes-5000-dollars-an-ounce\/105122318\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105122318\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$5,000 an ounce for the first time<\/a> in April last year, then hit <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-13\/record-gold-prices-drive-investment-in-exploration-australia\/106121424\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106121424\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$6,000\/oz in October<\/a> and passed <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-21\/gold-price-continues-to-smash-historic-records\/106252736\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106252736\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$7,000\/oz in January<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It really sort of flooded in around October, November last year. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p>Demand for drill rigs<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One of Australia&#8217;s biggest drilling companies, DDH1, operates 72 drill rigs across its fleet, specialising in diamond drilling for commodities like gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is called diamond drilling because industrial diamonds embedded in the drill bit cut through the hard rock to produce what is known as a core sample. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">DDH1 general manager Peter Crennan said they had sourced several rigs from interstate to meet demand from the WA gold industry. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have seen glimpses of this before, but the gold industry is as busy as we&#8217;ve ever seen it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The drilling activity has been picking up steadily over the last 12 or 18 months \u2026 we&#8217;re not fully utilised just yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Availability is still there, but it is becoming tighter and tighter.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Surbiton Associates director Sandra Close was a geologist and investment banker in the resources sector for decades before founding a Melbourne-based gold consultancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with white hair and a pink cardigan stands news a window. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/497c22241994c02e38bf08307d67b315.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sandra Close has seen the industry change immensely since she started as a geologist in 1967. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said she had not seen gold exploration expenditure like current levels for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In 1987, gold exploration accounted for 70 per cent of total mineral exploration in Australia,&#8221; Dr Close said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And of course, that led to considerable production and really was the run-up in the modern gold boom in the 80s through to the 90s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Normally, you would hope that sort of exploration certainly leads to more finds. There&#8217;s a hell of a lot of activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gold in those hills<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At Widgiemooltha, 630km east of Perth, Ms Wellman&#8217;s Dynamic Metals is using investor and taxpayer funds to explore in WA&#8217;s latest gold rush.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is in the same backyard that produced the famous Golden Eagle nugget \u2014 the biggest found in WA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While prospectors have combed over the ground for generations, modern explorers are more interested in the potential for large-scale mineralisation hidden beneath the surface. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The tenements are located along the same geographical structure, known as the Boulder-Lefroy fault, which produced multi-million-ounce deposits at the nearby St Ives camp and Kalgoorlie&#8217;s Golden Mile. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Men wearing suits holding a large gold nugget in an old black and white photograph.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/038cd54ccd728ead081da4c9a0a214a9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The 1,135-ounce Golden Eagle was naturally shaped like an eagle with outspread wings, and created a national sensation after its discovery near Widgiemooltha in 1931. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Wellman said while there was a staged, scientific approach to exploration, there was always an element of luck. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You do have better odds at the casino, but it&#8217;s part of the adventure when you get your assays back and you&#8217;ve got a sniff of gold,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like unlocking a puzzle.
