Goalkeeper Anton\u00edn Kinsky<\/a> was hauled off after only 17 minutes as Tottenham<\/a> slumped to a 3-0 deficit in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg<\/a> at Atl\u00e9tico Madrid<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Marcos Llorente<\/a> put the home side ahead after only six minutes at the Metropolitano, following a mistake by Kinsky to give the ball away, before Antoine Griezmann<\/a> made it 2-0.<\/p>\n

Then, moments after Griezmann’s goal, Kinsky attempted a first-time pass out of his area with his left foot but miskicked again. The ball rolled into the path of Juli\u00e1n \u00c1lvarez<\/a>, who had the simple task of slotting the ball into an empty net.<\/p>\n

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero<\/a> walked over to interim manager Igor Tudor before Atl\u00e9tico could kick off again and Kinsky’s number was held up for the fourth official moments later with usual first-choice Guglielmo Vicario<\/a> subbed into the game.<\/p>\n

Tudor defended the decision to start the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been coaching 15 years and I’ve never done that,” Tudor said in his postgame news conference. “It was necessary to preserve the guy, preserve the team. It was an incredible situation.<\/p>\n

“Before the game, it was the right choice to do. It was the right decision for me. After this happened, of course it’s easy to say it wasn’t the right decision. He’s a good goalkeeper. Unfortunately it happened with these mistakes, in a big game. We are fragile, we are weak.”<\/p>\n

Romero and Kevin Danso<\/a> hugged Kinsky as he left the pitch and the Czech goalkeeper walked straight down the tunnel after a nightmare debut in the Champions League proper.<\/p>\n

Kinsky had previously appeared in the Champions League qualifying round and was making his first start for Tottenham in any competition since October.<\/p>\n

Spurs substitutes Jo\u00e3o Palhinha<\/a>, Conor Gallagher<\/a> and Dominic Solanke<\/a> raced after Kinsky along with staff member Dean Brill following a chastening night in Madrid for the young goalkeeper in only his 13th appearance for the Premier League<\/a> club.<\/p>\n

It tied for the earliest goalkeeper substitution in Champions League knockout stage matches with Lyon’s Gr\u00e9gory Coupet, who was taken off vs. Real Sociedad after 17 minutes in the 2003-04 round of 16.<\/p>\n

“He was sorry,” Tudor said of Kinsky. “The team is with him, me too. I was speaking with him, he understands why he went off. He’s a very good goalkeeper. It’s never about one player.”<\/p>\n

The switch didn’t stop the goals, as Robin Le Normand<\/a> made it 4-0 in the 22nd minute, making it the second-quickest time for a team to score four in a Champions League match. Only their rivals Real Madrid<\/a> (vs. Dinamo Zagreb in 2011) have managed it faster.<\/p>\n

Spurs did regain an element of respectability as Pedro Porro<\/a> and Dominic Solanke<\/a> scored for the visitors either side of a second goal for \u00c1lvarez.<\/p>\n

But Tottenham will still have a huge task of overturning a 5-2 deficit in the second leg in north London next week.<\/p>\n

Tudor — appointed last month — is already under pressure, with the team having lost its past five matches going into the game in Madrid.<\/p>\n

“It’s not a topic for me,” Tudor said of his future. “It’s not about my job, it’s about how to help the team.<\/p>\n

“I recognize what we are, which problems we have. Every game something happens, sometimes it’s very difficult to explain.<\/p>\n

“These things, when they happen, in the moment we are now, unfortunately it’s like that. Slips happen, it explains the moment, because they didn’t [slip], and the pitch was the same for both teams.”<\/p>\n
