{"id":533706,"date":"2026-03-11T17:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/533706\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T17:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:03:08","slug":"virgil-van-dijk-liverpool-have-to-show-they-deserve-to-go-through-in-champions-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/533706\/","title":{"rendered":"Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool have to show they deserve to go through in Champions League"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a data-player-guid=\"c350cf83-87c2-aedd-b25b-7e9f3f3fa4dd\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/157892\/virgil-van-dijk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virgil van Dijk<\/a> is confident <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a47fbcec-c948-cf4c-9e41-3dfa37588c9c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=364\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liverpool<\/a> will overturn their first-leg loss at <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"5b23d52e-b1ae-2e88-5263-936f59c03912\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=432\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galatasaray<\/a> but knows Arne Slot&#8217;s side face a fight to earn a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.<\/p>\n<p>An ear-splitting last-16 encounter in Istanbul ended in the Reds falling to a 1-0 defeat to the Turkish champions, just as September&#8217;s group phase encounter did at a similarly rambunctious Rams Park.<\/p>\n<p>Mario Lemina&#8217;s early header from a poorly defended corner secured Galatasaray the advantage on a chaotic evening that saw wasteful Liverpool splutter and leave aggrieved with some of the officiating.<\/p>\n<p>Van Dijk feels he should have been awarded a penalty from the corner that saw an <a data-player-guid=\"ffcffb8d-afa2-bae4-621c-ee7296909896\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/251634\/ibrahima-konate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ibrahima Konat\u00e9<\/a> equaliser ruled out, but the skipper is parking that frustration in preparation for Wednesday&#8217;s return fixture at Anfield.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Virgil van Dijk has called on Liverpool to fight for their Champions League survival.\u00a0Photo by Yasin Akgul\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen a lot, in terms of the chances that we created, but it doesn&#8217;t mean that that&#8217;s going to be enough,&#8221; the Liverpool defender said. &#8220;We have to fight, we have to deserve it. We have to earn the next round.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Next week obviously is the decider. The matter of fact is that we&#8217;re at home, I think there&#8217;s only our fans there, so hopefully it&#8217;s going to be an amazing evening positively for us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we have to show that we want and deserve to go through, first and foremost, in the way we play, defend and attack, so that&#8217;s the aim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Van Dijk certainly saw enough in Turkey to believe the Reds can progress to a quarterfinal against <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c43a00b9-2826-72b3-77a0-62730abc936e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=363\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelsea<\/a> or holders Paris St Germain, but first comes a <a data-league-guid=\"6949f3af-300c-35f1-beab-b95669eedd38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/league\/_\/name\/ENG.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Premier League<\/a> game against another side reeling from European disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Tottenham&#8217;s miserable domestic run, which has seen them drop to 16th and just a point above the relegation zone, extended to the continental stage as under-fire Igor Tudor oversaw a humiliating 5-2 first-leg loss at Atletico Madrid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48172176\/jamie-carragher-liverpool-loss-million-miles-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8211; Jamie Carragher after Liverpool loss: They are a &#8216;million miles off&#8217;<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48167059\/slot-rues-wasteful-finishing-var-woes-liverpool-loss-galatasaray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8211; Slot rues wasteful finishing, VAR woes in Liverpool loss<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/report\/_\/gameId\/401862667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8211; Galatasaray gain upper hand in 1st leg win over Liverpool<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Van Dijk was shocked to hear of Spurs&#8217; wretched start to Tuesday&#8217;s Champions League tie in Spain but says their current slide should not disguise their threats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First we have to focus on Spurs, because that&#8217;s going to be a tough one as well,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even when they are struggling, [on Tuesday night] or over the last couple of weeks, they will come to Anfield, and especially at the start have a feeling that they could get a result.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Van Dijk stressed the need for an all-round display from Liverpool rather than picking on any below-par contributions after Mohamed Salah&#8217;s ineffective performance was brought up following his withdrawal on the hour mark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s all about the team,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Mo is such an important part of the team, so we need to get the best of everyone and it&#8217;s not a particular player.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We play for the badge, for the club, for trying to get results, and everyone has to contribute in that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have qualities enough and obviously in Mo&#8217;s case there&#8217;s no doubt that he has the qualities, and he showed it on such a consistent basis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He is important and will still be important until the end of the season.
